Grünau (Leipzig)
Grünau [ɡʁyˈnaʊ̯] is a large housing estate in the western part of Leipzig, Germany, designed in the 1970s and 1980s. It dominates the Stadtbezirk Leipzig-West. In its short history Grünau was at times the most populated district of Leipzig with a maximum of 85,000 inhabitants (1989). Together with Marzahn (Berlin) and Halle-Neustadt, the large housing estate of Grünau was one of the largest Large panel system building, prefabricated housing estates (so-called ''Plattenbau'') of East Germany and is the largest settlement of this type in Saxony. It consists of eight ''Wohnkomplex'' (translation: residential complexes, abbreviation WK) with large apartment buildings of the dwelling series WBS 70. Despite the good infrastructure, the population of Grünau declined rapidly after 1990. In 2010, the district lost more than half of its residents and thousands of apartments were demolished. Leipzig (, ; ; Upper Saxon: ; ) is the most populous city in the States of Germany, German state of Saxony. The city has a population of 628,718 inhabitants as of 2023. A housing cooperative, or housing co-op, is a legal entity which owns real estate consisting of one or more residential buildings. The entity is usually a cooperative or a corporation and constitutes a form of housing tenure. Typically housing cooperatives are owned by shareholders but in some cases they can be owned by a non-profit organization. The PH 16 (German language, German: ''Punkthochhaus mit 16 Geschossen'') is a skyscraper with 16 floors; a type of industrial housing in East Germany. Construction The PH 16 has 132 apartments, one or two small commercial units on the ground floor, as well as parking and trash rooms within the building. The development was primarily via two internal lifts and an H-shaped canal system on each floor, which served both 9 apartments.
