Grønningen, Copenhagen
Grønningen is a street in central Copenhagen, Denmark, connecting Bredgade and the intersecting street Esplanaden to Oslo Plads in front of Østerport Station along the southwestern margin of the fortification Kastellet. It lends its name to the artists' cooperative Grønningen which was originally based in the street. History The triangular area between Esplanaden, Store Kongensgade ( Nyboder) and Kastellet was from 1782 home to a ropewalk. It was later converted into a Guard Hussars barracks. At the turn of the 20th century, it was decided to demolish the outdated installation to make way for high-end apartment buildings. A competition was held and a plan for redevelopment of the area was adopted by the city on 29 June 1903. Demolition of the barracks buildings began on 1 November 1905 and the area was sold to private investors shortly thereafter. Moat
A moat is a deep, broad ditch, either dry or filled with water, that is dug and surrounds a castle, fortification, building or town, historically to provide it with a preliminary line of defence. In some places moats evolved into more extensive water defences, including natural or artificial lakes, dams and sluices. Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen
Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen (born Anne Marie Brodersen; 21 June 1863 – 21 February 1945) was a Danish sculptor. Her preferred themes were domestic animals and people, with an intense, naturalistic portrayal of movements and sentiments. She also depicted themes from Nordic mythology. She was "one of the first women to be taken seriously as a sculptor," a trend-setter in Danish art for most of her life. She was married to the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Early life Brodersen was born on Thygesminde, a large farm estate in South Stenderup, near Kolding. Her father Povl Julius Brodersen served in the German Dragoons before purchasing the farm. He married Friderikke Johanne Kirstine Gilling, who was his housekeeper. The Brodersens were "successful, daring people", some of the first to import livestock directly from England. In architecture, functionalism is the principle that buildings should be designed based solely on their purpose and function. This principle is a matter of confusion and controversy within the profession, particularly in regard to modern architecture, as it is less self-evident than it first appears. The theoretical articulation of functionalism in buildings can be traced back to the Vitruvian triad, where ''utilitas'' (variously translated as 'commodity', 'convenience', or 'utility') stands alongside ''firmitas'' (firmness) and ''venustas'' (beauty) as one of three classic goals of architecture. Carl Brummer
Carl Harald Brummer (12 July 1864 – 14 February 1953) was a Danish architect who was influential in the design of homes at the beginning of the 20th century. Biography Brummer was born in Bogense. After attending the Danish Academy from 1888 to 1896, he worked for Ferdinand Meldahl and Hermann Baagøe Storck. He initially became known for Ellestuen, a freely designed country home which was quite different from conventional houses in Denmark. He soon became one of the leading Danish architects for designing private homes between the beginning of the 20th century and the First World War including Svanemøllevej 56 (1904) and Lundevangsvej 12 (1908), both in Copenhagen. He also drew on architecture from the late 18th century, for example in designing Heymans Villa in 1907 before adopting the Neoclassical style and experimenting with other approaches including simplified Functional designs which can be seen in Gurre Church (1918) and his own home (1920). Hagemann Mansion
The Hagemann Mansion is a town mansion located at Grønningen 11 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It now serves as the Finnish ambassador's residence in Copenhagen. History The mansion was built for the financier Paul Hagemann in 1918. The architect was Carl Brummer. The Finnish state purchased the building from Hagemann in 1943. One of Hagemann's sons, Jørgen Hagemann, had been a military volunteer on the Finnish side in the Winter War against the Soviet Union and again in the Continuation War where he was killed in action at Hangö in the summer of 1941. Today The building contains the official residence of the Finnish ambassador to Denmark. It also contains residences for other staff at the embassy, representative facilities and guest rooms. Grønningen is a Danish artists cooperative whose members arrange exhibitions and similar events. Founded in 1915, it is one of the oldest and most important groupings of its kind in Denmark and currently has 54 members. It is named after the street Grønningen in Copenhagen where the first art exhibition was held. Initially, it brought together artists interested in radical and experimental art who had been members of Den Frie Udstilling ("The Free Exhibition"). Most prominent in the early years were artists such as Harald Giersing, Sigurd Swane, Olaf Rude, William Scharff, Fritz Syberg and Johannes Larsen. They were soon joined by Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Svend Johansen, Axel Salto, Jens Søndergaard, Niels Lergaard, Erik Hoppe, Christine Swane, Astrid Noack and Gottfred Eickhoff.
