Grodno Governorate
Grodno Governorate was an administrative-territorial unit (''guberniya'') of the Northwestern Krai of the Russian Empire, with its capital in Grodno. It encompassed in area and consisted of a population of 1,603,409 inhabitants by 1897. Grodno Governorate was bordered by Suwałki Governorate to the north, Vilna Governorate to the northeast, Minsk Governorate to the east, Volhynian Governorate, Volhynia Governorate to the south, Kholm Governorate (Russian Empire), Kholm Governorate to the west, and Łomża Governorate to the northwest. Governorate (Russia)
A governorate (, , ) was a major and principal administrative subdivision of the Russian Empire. After the October Revolution, Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, governorates remained as subdivisions in the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, Byelorussian, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Russian and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Ukrainian Soviet republics, and in the Soviet Union from its formation in 1922 until 1929. Grodno, or Hrodna, is a city in western Belarus. It is one of the oldest cities in Belarus. Białowieża Forest
Białowieża Forest is a large forest complex on the border between Poland and Belarus. It is one of the last and the largest remaining part of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. The forest is home to more than 800 European bison, Europe's heaviest land animal.
