Grobiņa Municipality
Grobiņa Municipality () was a municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Bārta Parish, Gavieze Parish, Grobiņa Parish, Medze Parish and the town of Grobiņa with the administrative centre being Grobiņa. The population in 2020 was 8,347. Grobiņa Municipality ceased to exist on 1 July 2021, when it was merged into the newly formed South Kurzeme Municipality. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (, ''novads'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, valstspilsēta''). The municipalities are also further divided into 71 cities/towns (''pilsētas'', '' pilsēta'') and 512 parishes (''pagasti, pagasts''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional. In response, the Saeima decided to preserve the existence of Varakļāni Municipality as a 43rd local government unit until 2025. In June 2024 the Saeima decreed that Varakļāni Municipality will be merged into Madona Municipality immediately after the 2025 Latvian municipal elections, 2025 Latvian local elections. South Kurzeme Municipality
South Kurzeme Municipality () is one of the 35 Municipalities of Latvia, municipalities established in Latvia in 2021. It surrounds Liepāja, Latvia's third largest city. Its first elected municipal council took office on 1 July 2021. Its seat is at Grobiņa. Geography South Kurzeme is Latvia's largest municipality, covering an area of . Fricis Rokpelnis (6 October 1909 in Alkšņos, Courland, Russian Empire – 15 September 1969 in Jūrmala, Latvian SSR) was a Soviet and Latvian poet, writer and screenwriter, who is best known for writing the lyrics to the Anthem of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic The State Anthem of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic was the anthem of Latvia from 1945 to 1990 when it was occupied by the Soviet Union. Eduard Schmidt Von Der Launitz
Nikolaus Karl Eduard Schmidt von der Launitz (born Nikolaus Karl Eduard Launitz; 23 November 1797 – 12 December 1869) was a German sculptor. Biography Launitz was born a Baltic German in Grobin, Courland, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He was raised in Vechelde in the Duchy of Brunswick in 1809 after the death of his parents. In 1815 he began studying jurisprudence at the University of Göttingen. He became more interested in art, however, and visited an artists' colony in Rome. There he became a student of Bertel Thorvaldsen, whom he assisted in restoring the Æginetan marbles. Schmidt von der Launitz spent most of his adult life in Frankfurt. He taught at the Städel in Frankfurt and the art academy in Düsseldorf. Schmidt von der Launitz is buried in the Hauptfriedhof Frankfurt. The Latvian Legion () was a formation of the Nazi German Waffen-SS during World War II. Created in 1943, it consisted primarily of ethnic Latvians.Gerhard P.
