Grindelwald, Tasmania
Grindelwald is a rural/residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of West Tamar in the Launceston LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-east of the town of Beaconsfield. The 2016 census recorded a population of 965 for the state suburb of Grindelwald. Grindelwald is the final stop of the annual TasGas cycling challenge. History Grindelwald was gazetted as a locality in 1983. It is named after a village in Switzerland. It is a small town just north of Launceston, developed in the style of a Swiss village by Roelf Vos, a Dutch immigrant to Tasmania, after he sold his "Roelf Vos" supermarket chain to Woolworths. It was built around an artificial lake, on the edge of which sits the 40 hectare Tamar Valley Resort, which shares the Swiss architectural style. West Tamar Council
West Tamar Council is a local government body in Tasmania, situated along the western side of the Tamar River in the north of the state. West Tamar is classified as an urban local government area and has a population of 23,769, it extends from the outer reaches of north-west Launceston and includes the towns and localities of Beaconsfield, Beauty Point and Legana. History and attributes The municipality was established on 2 April 1993, after the boundaries of the Beaconsfield municipality were extended and its name changed to West Tamar. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th Census in Australia, national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. Roelf Vos
Roelf Vos (1921 – 2 December 1992) was a Dutch Australian businessman who established a supermarket chain carrying his name initially in Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston, and later throughout northern Tasmania. The equivalent in the south of the state was Purity Supermarkets established by Sypkes family, Engel Sypkes. Early life Born and raised in the Netherlands, Vos was involved in the Dutch resistance during the Second World War. Legana is a rural and residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of West Tamar in the Launceston LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-east of the town of Beaconsfield. The 2021 census has a population of 4,769 for the state suburb of Legana. It is 12 kilometres north of Tasmania's second largest city, Launceston. It is adjacent to Riverside, Bridgenorth, Grindelwald and Rosevears. The name "Legana" is based on the Palawa word for "fresh water" since it is at the point where the Tamar River becomes fresh water. There is currently a homestead called "Freshwater" which was adjacent to a private jetty where early settlers traded with the local natives. This homestead, in Nobelius Drive, now operates as a Bed and Breakfast accommodation house. Legana is also the name of a comparatively little-known and rare apple variety bred at Legana. Bridgenorth is a locality and small rural community in the local government area of West Tamar, in the Western Tamar Valley region of Tasmania. It is located about north-west of the town of Launceston. A small part of the locality, about 4.5%, is in the Meander Valley Council area.
