Greenbrier, Virginia
Greenbrier is a community located in the independent city of Chesapeake, Virginia, United States. It is made up of two sections, Greenbrier East and Greenbrier West. Greenbrier Parkway, a major road in Greenbrier, is the commercial hub of Chesapeake. Shopping centers line this major road, including Greenbrier Mall. Another major road, Volvo Parkway, cuts across Greenbrier Parkway. This road leads to the more residential section of Greenbrier along Battlefield Boulevard as well as another shopping center. Elizabeth Rolfe was born here in 1620 to English colonist John Rolfe and his third wife, Jane Pierce. Two years later, Jane married Captain Roger Smith after Rolfe's death. Elizabeth was married to John Milner of Nansemond until her death in 1635. Public schools Greenbrier public schools include Greenbrier Primary, Greenbrier Intermediate, and Greenbrier Middle School. Greenbrier Mall is a nearly regional mall in Chesapeake, Virginia, United States in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The mall has a hillside terrain, with entries on both upper and lower levels. It serves communities on the East Coast in the states of Virginia and North Carolina. Indian River High School (Virginia)
Indian River High School is a high school in Chesapeake, Virginia. As of the 2023-24 school year, it had approximately 1600 students. History The school originally opened in the fall of 1963 for 7th graders. From that day forward they were always the 'seniors' at Indian River Junior High. In their Junior 67-'68year the school board was petitioned and the school was upgraded to Indian River Senior High. There were approximately 185 students that graduated in 1969. Their dedication and pride got the school accredited. They set the traditions in motion. A mother of one of the students wrote the Alma Mater, they picked the school colors, the mascot. The original IRHS, which opened in 1967, was on Old Greenbrier Road, while construction on the current building took place. Nansemond, Virginia
Nansemond is an extinct jurisdiction that was located south of the James River in Virginia Colony and in the Commonwealth of Virginia (after statehood) in the United States, from 1646 until 1974. It was known as Nansemond County until 1972. From 1972 to 1974, a period of eighteen months, it was the independent city of Nansemond. It is now part of the independent city of Suffolk. English colonists named it for the Nansemond, a tribe of Native Americans who had long been living along the Nansemond River, a tributary of what the English later named as the James River. John Rolfe
John Rolfe ( – March 1622) was an English explorer, farmer and merchant. He is best known for being the husband of Pocahontas and the first settler in the colony of Virginia to successfully cultivate a tobacco crop for export. He played a crucial role in the Virginia Colony's early economy by introducing a sweeter strain of tobacco from Trinidad, which became a profitable cash crop. Rolfe married Pocahontas, daughter of Native American leader Powhatan, and they had a son named Thomas. Rolfe and Pocahontas traveled to England in 1616 to promote colonization and investment in Virginia. After Pocahontas died, Rolfe returned to Virginia and continued working with tobacco.
