Greccio
Greccio () is an old hilltown and ''comune'' of the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio, overhanging the Rieti Valley on a spur of the Monti Sabini, a sub-range of the Apennines, about by road northwest of Rieti, the nearest large town. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy"). The town hall of the comune is in the ''frazione'' of Limiti di Greccio. Greccio was the place where, in December 1223, Saint Francis of Assisi devised the first living Nativity scene (in Italian: ''presepe''). The Nativity scene tradition continues there to this day, and a memorial of Saint Francis, the Sanctuary of Greccio, may be visited. Etymology The first hypothesis on the tymology of the town's name is linked to the settlement of ancient Greek colonists in the same place where Greccio now stands. Sanctuary Of Greccio
The Hermitage of Greccio Sanctuary () is one of the four shrines erected by Saint Francis of Assisi in the Sacred Valley, along with the Sanctuary of Fonte Colombo, the Sanctuary of the Forest, and the convent of Poggio Bustone. It is located in the Italian town of Greccio, about from the city of Rieti, seat of the homonym province, is recessed at an altitude of above sea level, in the rocks of the mountains in the immediate vicinity of the medieval village of Greccio with views of the wide Rieti Valley. Francis presented the first living Nativity scene in a nearby cave in December 1223. Legend The Saint Francis of Assisi legendarium affirms that he chose this place for devotions. Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone ( 1181 – 3 October 1226), known as Francis of Assisi, was an Italians, Italian Mysticism, mystic, poet and Friar, Catholic friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans. I Borghi Più Belli D'Italia
() is a non-profit private association of small Italian towns of strong historical and artistic interest, that was founded in March 2001 on the initiative of the Tourism Council of the National Association of Italian Municipalities, with the aim of preserving and maintaining villages of quality heritage. Its motto is ("The charm of hidden Italy"). Participants in the group are small population centres which risk neglect and abandonment because they lie outside the main tourist circuits. Initially they comprised about a hundred villages, but had increased to 361 in 2023. The Rieti Valley or Rieti Plain ( or ''Conca Reatina'') is a small plain in central Italy, where lies the city of Rieti, Lazio. It is also known as Sacred Valley and Holy Valley () since saint Francis of Assisi lived here for many years and erected four shrines, which have become the destination of pilgrims. It is the center of the Sabine region and an important part of the province of Rieti. Originated from the draining of the ancient ''Lake Velino'', it is crossed by the Velino river and bordered by Monti Reatini and Monti Sabini. Origin In prehistory, the Rieti Valley was entirely occupied by a large lake which ancient Romans called ''Lake Velinus'', since its tributary was the Velino river. Antonio Vite
Antonio Vite was a fourteenth century Italian painter of the early 15th century. He was a pupil of Gherardo Starnina, and was born at Pistoia. He was active around the year 1428, and was perhaps identical with one ''Antonio Filippo da Pistoia'', whose name occurs in records of the period. He is said to have worked in the Campo Santo at Pisa.
