Great Raid Of The Pasaje Begoña
On the night of 25 through 26 June 1971, police raided a number of businesses along the Pasaje Begoña, an alley in Torremolinos, Spain known for its LGBTQ friendly businesses and clubs. The event would later be known as the Great Raid of the Pasaje Begoña, ('','' literally "Grand Raid of the Begoña Passage"). Twenty-three businesses were closed, several were fined, and between one and three hundred people, many of which were tourists, were arrested. The local police were accused of perpetrating homophobic and transphobic violence during the raid, coercing confessions, and threatening journalists in its aftermath. As a result of the raid, the LGBTQ community in Torremolinos were dispersed and tourism in the area decreased. Torremolinos () is a municipality in Andalusia, southern Spain, west of Málaga. A poor fishing village before the growth in tourism began in the late 1950s, Torremolinos was the first of the Costa del Sol resorts to be developed and is still the most popular in the region. In October 1973, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) announced that it was implementing a total oil embargo against countries that had supported Israel at any point during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which began after Egypt and Syria launched a large-scale surprise attack in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to recover the territories that they had lost to Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.
