Grazalema, Cádiz
Grazalema is a village located in the northeastern part of the province of Cádiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra del Pinar mountain range (Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park), Grazalema had, as of 2009, a population of 2,205. History The Roman villa of Lacidulia or Lacidulerium, situated in an estate near to the present village, has been traditionally considered the ancestor of Grazalema. During Muslim rule in the 8th century, these lands were populated by people of North African origin and from them, the area acquired the name of Raisa lami Suli. During this period, its economy was organised around forestry, agriculture, farming and textile manufacture. With the Christian conquest in 1485, Zagrazalema, as it was called at the time, became part of the lands of the Rodrigo Ponce de León y Núñez. Grazalema Blanket
A Grazalema blanket (), also known as Grazalema cloth () is a type of striped brown and beige thick cloth that was particularly popular between the 17th and 19th centuries. It takes its name from the town of its origin, Grazalema, one of the main manufacturing centres of wool products in Spain. Using wool from the region as raw material and since Grazalema is one of the rainiest places in Spain, this water was used to wash the wool, producing exceptional results. Author Blasco Ibáñez made multiple references to the blankets and capes of Grazalema, and Julio Romero de Torres wrote about how before a fire destroyed the municipal archive of Grazalema, it had contained the Royal Decree by means of which Philip V had granted privileges to those who made textiles and wool products in the town. Rodrigo Ponce De León, Duke Of Cádiz
Rodrigo Ponce de Leon, Duke of Cádiz (1443–1492) was one of the Castile (historical region), Castilian military leaders in the conquest of Granada. In 1482, he led the Castilian forces that captured the town of Alhama and later Boabdil. He had earlier been one of the military leaders in the Castilian War of Succession. Juan Pacheco was his father-in-law. He was made 1st Duke of Cádiz in 1484 and succeeded briefly by his heir Francisca Ponce de León y de la Fuente. Sierra De Grazalema Natural Park
The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park () is a natural park in the northeastern part of the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. The park encompasses, within its , a complex of mountain ranges, known collectively as the Sierra de Grazalema, which, in turn, are part of the Cordillera Subbética. Other ranges within the park, comprising the Sierra de Grazalema, include the Sierra de Zafalgar, the Sierra del Pinar, and the Sierra de Endrinal. ''Pinar'' (or ''Torreón''), in elevation, is the tallest peak. The Sierra de Grazalema, a karstic region, contains a number of large limestone caverns, including the Cueva del Gato, the Cueva de la Pileta and the Garganta Verde.
