Grand Place, Réunion
Grand Place is a village in the commune La Possession in the France, French overseas departments and regions of France, overseas department of Réunion, La Réunion, an island in the Indian Ocean. The hamlet (fr. îlet = little island) is situated in the Mafate, Cirque de Mafate, a caldera of the Piton des Neiges volcano, which is part of the Réunion National Park. It is accessible only on foot or by helicopter. Village structure Grand Place is one of the settlements in the Mafate cirque with the largest surface area and stretches on a sloped plane that reaches from 520 m up to ~1000 m in the shadow of Piton Calumet (height 1616 m). La Possession () is a Commune in France, commune in the France, French overseas departments and regions of France, overseas department of Réunion. It is located in the northwestern part of the island of Réunion, between the capital of Saint-Denis, Réunion, Saint-Denis and the commune of Le Port, Réunion, Le Port. These overseas entities have exactly the same status as European France's departments and regions. Mafate
The ''Cirque de Mafate'' is a caldera on Réunion Island (France; located in the Indian Ocean). It was formed from the collapse of the large shield volcano the ''Piton des Neiges''. The very remote and inaccessible cirque was settled in the 19th century by maroon slaves (i.e. slaves who had escaped from their masters), then later by poor white laborers. It owes its name to one maroon leader. Geography The cirque is entirely enclosed by mountains, especially tall cliffs, known as ''remparts'', save for the sole river exiting, the ''Rivière des Galets'' ("river of the pebbles"). Piton Des Neiges
The Piton des Neiges (Snow Peak) is a complex volcano on Réunion, one of the French volcanic islands in the Mascarene Archipelago in the southwestern Indian Ocean. It is located about east of Madagascar. Piton des Neiges is the highest point on Réunion and considered to be the highest point in the Indian Ocean. Piton des Neiges is ranked 82nd by prominence.
