Grafton, Ontario
Grafton is a community in the province of Ontario. It is an example of the type of hamlets that flourished in the 19th century. Location Grafton is located in Northumberland County, in the township of Alnwick/Haldimand. It is 12 km east of Cobourg, Ontario on the former Highway 2 (now County Road 2), with close access to Highway 401. The hamlet is near the geographically significant Oak Ridges Moraine at Rice Lake. Name Grafton was originally called Grover's Tavern until March 1832, when it was renamed in honour of the hometown of John Grover: Grafton, Massachusetts. The original Grover's Tavern, the namesake building of the hamlet, still stands today as the Grafton Village Inn, a restaurant and bed and breakfast in the heart of the hamlet. It was also referred to early in its history as Haldimand, which is the name of the township it is located in. The Sons of Temperance was and is a brotherhood of men who promoted the temperance movement and Benefit society, mutual support. The organization was started in New York City in 1842. In the 1840s, it spread quickly across the United States and some of Canada before reaching the UK, Australia and New Zealand. United States and Canada Membership The organization originally had a highly restricted membership. In order to become a member (called a “brother“), a man had to be nominated by an existing brother. Three other brothers would then investigate his life to determine if they thought he was worthy of membership. Robert Mandt Homme, C.M. ( ; March 8, 1919 – May 2, 2000) was an American-Canadian television actor. Homme was best known as the host of ''The Friendly Giant'', a popular children's television program that aired from the 1950s through the 1980s and was broadcast on CBC Television. Background Homme was born in Stoughton, Wisconsin into a Norwegian family. His parents were high school woodworking teachers, Raymond and Roselyn Homme. He attended elementary school at West Side School before attending Stoughton High School where he graduated in 1937.
