The classification system of inhabited localities in Russia and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with those in other countries. Classes During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast
Gorodets () is a town and the administrative center of Gorodetsky District in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Volga River, northwest of Nizhny Novgorod, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 34,000 (1970). History The town was founded in 1152 by Prince Yury Dolgoruky (also the founder of Moscow) as a large fortress on the Volga River, the first Russian fortress in today's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It was a starting point for numerous campaigns of the princes of Vladimir and Suzdal against Volga Bulgaria. In 1216, Yury II of Vladimir was dethroned by his brother and exiled here. In 1239, the town was burned to the ground by Batu Khan's army. Folk tradition identifies Gorodets with Little Kitezh, a legendary town destroyed by the Mongols. Alexander Semyonovich Vedernikov
Alexander Semyonovich Vedernikov (; 23 November 1898 - 21 January 1975) was a Russians, Russian artist. He was born in the city of Gorodets, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gorodets in Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. He studied at the Nizhny Novgorod art workshops (1921–24) with Alexander V. Kuprin and Artur Fonvizin, and at the Leningrad Vkhutemas-Vhutein (1924–28) with Osip Braz and Alexei Karev. He was a member of the Society "" (Круг художников) (1928-30) and from 1939 he worked at the Leningrad Experimental Lithographic Workshop. Identified with the Leningrad landscape school, his work was exhibited in numerous shows of Leningrad artists in the postwar decades. His paintings are preserved in the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg; Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow. He died in Leningrad in 1975.
