Goldfields–Esperance
The Goldfields–Esperance region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is located in the south-eastern corner of Western Australia, and comprises the local government areas of Coolgardie, Dundas, Esperance, Kalgoorlie–Boulder, Laverton, Leonora, Menzies, Ngaanyatjarraku, Ravensthorpe and Wiluna. It also incorporates the area along the Great Australian Bight to the South Australian border known as the Nullarbor Plain. Geography The Goldfields–Esperance region is the largest of Western Australia's regions, with an area of . It is mostly a low and flat plateau of extremely ancient Precambrian rocks that have been stable since long before the Paleozoic Era. Regions Of Western Australia
Western Australia (WA) is divided into regions according to a number of systems. The most common system is the division of the state by the Government of Western Australia in 1993 into regions for economic development purposes, which comprises nine defined regional regions that exclude the Perth metropolitan region. However, there are a number of other systems, including those made for purposes of land management (such as agriculture and conservation), information gathering (such as statistical and meteorological), and election for political office. The various different systems were defined for different purposes and at different times, and give specific boundaries, but although many of the different systems' regions have similar names, they have different boundaries; the names and boundaries of regions can and do vary between systems. Local Government Areas Of Western Australia
There are 137 local government areas (LGAs) in Western Australia, which comprise 27 cities, 102 shires, and 8 towns that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the '' Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. The Shire of Esperance is a Local government areas of Western Australia, local government area in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, about south of the town of Kalgoorlie and about east-southeast of the state capital, Perth. City Of Kalgoorlie–Boulder
The City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder is a local government area in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, about east of the state capital, Perth. Its seat of government is the town of Kalgoorlie; all but 244 of the city's population live in either Kalgoorlie or Boulder. History This region has a long history of continuous inhabitation and cultivation by Aboriginal Australians. In the years immediately after discovery of gold in the region, a variety of local government entities sprang up around the often-temporary settlements on the Kalgoorlie goldfields. Shire Of Ngaanyatjarraku
The Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku is a remote local government area in Western Australia near the Northern Territory/South Australian border. It is from Perth. It was formed on 1 July 1993 following a report of the Local Government Boundaries Commission in 1992. The Shire of Wiluna was divided with the eastern area becoming the new Shire. It is a community of interest within the traditional lands of the Ngaanyatjarra people of the Central Desert of Western Australia. The 99-year leases held by the Ngaanyatjarra Land Council on behalf of the traditional owners also form the boundaries of the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku. The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Shire of Laverton is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about northeast of the city of Kalgoorlie and about east-northeast of the state capital, Perth. Great Victoria Desert
The Great Victoria Desert is a sparsely populated desert ecoregion and Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia, interim Australian bioregion in Western Australia and South Australia. History In 1875, British-born Australian explorer Ernest Giles became the first European to cross the desert. He named the desert after the then-reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. Gibson Desert
The Gibson Desert is a large desert in Western Australia, largely in an almost pristine state. It is about in size, making it the fifth largest desert in Australia, after the Great Victoria, Great Sandy, Tanami and Simpson deserts. The Gibson Desert is both an interim Australian bioregion and desert ecoregion. Location and description The Gibson Desert is located between the saline Kumpupintil Lake and Lake Macdonald along the Tropic of Capricorn, south of the Great Sandy Desert, east of the Little Sandy Desert, and north of the Great Victoria Desert. The Shire of Leonora is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about north of the city of Kalgoorlie and about northeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Leonora. History Leonora was originally part of the North Coolgardie Road District when that entity was gazetted in 1898. The town of Leonora was gazetted as the Municipality of Leonora with its own mayor in 1900. The Shire of Leonora originated from the Mount Malcolm Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912, when the North Coolgardie Road District was abolished and broken up into three separate road districts: Mount Malcolm, Kookynie and Menzies.
