Gogebic Community College
Gogebic Community College (GCC) is a public community college in Ironwood, Michigan. Founded as Ironwood Junior College in 1932, the college has a main campus in Ironwood and a site in Houghton, Michigan to serve Houghton County and the surrounding area. The college offers two-year associate's degrees, a variety of certification programs, occupational training, and other learning opportunities for the surrounding community. For the 2013–2014 academic year, the school had 1097 students, of which 18% were from outside Michigan and 6% were from minority groups. Ironwood is a city in Gogebic County, Michigan, Gogebic County in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, about south of Lake Superior. The city is on U.S. Route 2 in Michigan, US Highway 2 across the Montreal River (Wisconsin-Michigan), Montreal River from Hurley, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost city in Michigan, situated on the same line of longitude (90.2 degrees West) as Clinton, Iowa and St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. The city is bordered by Ironwood Charter Township, Michigan, Ironwood Township to the north, but the two are administered autonomously. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 14,380. The county seat is Bessemer, Michigan, Bessemer. Gogebic County is the List of extreme points of U.S. states and territories, westernmost county in Michigan, and is one of four Michigan counties within the Central Time Zone. The Gogebic Range is an elongated area of iron ore deposits located within a range of hills in northern Michigan and Wisconsin just south of Lake Superior. It extends from Lake Namakagon in Wisconsin eastward to Lake Gogebic in Michigan, or almost 80 miles. Though long, it is only about a half mile wide and forms a crescent wikt:concave, concave to the southeast. The Gogebic Range includes the communities of Bessemer, Michigan, Bessemer and Ironwood, Michigan, Ironwood in Michigan, plus Mellen, Wisconsin, Mellen and Hurley, Wisconsin, Hurley in Wisconsin. The name Gogebic is an Anglicized spelling from old style Ojibwe “googii-bi”, which loosely translates to "they dive here", most likely referring to the schools of fish that jump from the surface of Lake Gogebic. Gogebic Taconite is an iron-ore mining company in development stage, based in Florida, with a presence in Hurley, Wisconsin. The company, owned by the larger mining organizations, Cline Resource and Development Group, is at the center of a dispute among politicians, community groups, environmental organizations, Native American tribal councils and various stakeholders because of a proposed mining project scheduled for operation in Iron and Ashland counties in northern Wisconsin. Lake Gogebic ( ) is the largest natural inlandHanchin, P.
