Some cross-platform software requires a separate build for each platform, but some can be directly run on any platform without special preparation, being written in an interpreted language or compiled to portable bytecode for which the Interpreter (computing), interpreters or run-time packages are common or standard components of all supported platforms. For example, a cross-platform application software, application may run on Linux, macOS and Microsoft Windows. Cross-platform software may run on many platforms, or as few as two. The main components are Linux, util-linux, musl, and BusyBox. All components have been optimized to be small enough to fit into the limited storage and memory available in home routers. OpenWrt is configured using a command-line interface (Almquist shell, ash shell) or a web interface (LuCI). There are about 8000 optional software package (installation), software packages available for installation via the opkg package management system. OpenWrt can run on various types of devices, including Customer-premises equipment, CPE routers, residential gateways, smartphones, pocket computers (e.g., Ben NanoNote).
