Its seat is the village of Szydłów, which lies approximately west of Staszów and south-east of the regional capital Kielce. The gmina covers an area of , and as of 2010 its total population is 4,800. Demography According to the 2011 Poland census, there were 4,800 people residing in Szydłów Commune, of whom 50.7% were male and 49.3% were female. The gmina (Polish: , plural ''gminy'' ) is the basic unit of the administrative division of Poland, similar to a municipality. , there were 2,479 gminy throughout the country, encompassing over 43,000 villages. 940 gminy include cities and towns, with 322 among them constituting an independent urban gmina () consisting solely of a standalone town or one of the 107 cities, the latter governed by a city mayor (''prezydent miasta'').
