It is assigned to the largest of Minnesota's original two numbering plan areas (NPAs), although its geographical boundaries have been modified since inception. It comprises roughly the northern half of the state, and includes the cities of Duluth, Hibbing, Brainerd, Bemidji, Fergus Falls, and Moorhead. History In the initial 1947 map of the North American Numbering Plan, area code 218 was conceived as a lower-case ''r''-shaped area in the northern and western two-thirds of Minnesota. The southeastern portion, including the Twin Cities, was located in area code 612. As the implementation of the new telephone numbering plan proceeded, the Minnesota area code boundaries were redrawn in 1954 to avoid cutting across major toll traffic routes out of the Twin Cities. This resulted in three area codes, with 218 covering the northern band of the s ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Aitkin, Minnesota
Aitkin ( ) is a city and the county seat of Aitkin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,168 at the 2020 census. History Before the establishment of City of Aitkin, a transient community of Lexington was located at the mouth of the Ripple River, at its confluence with the Mississippi River. However, maps from the 1860s erroneously depict the village of Ojibway at the mouth of the Ripple River. Due to the importance of regional trade at Lexington, the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad was planned to pass near there. Aitkin was founded in 1870 when the Northern Pacific Railroad was extended to that point, replacing and annexing Lexington. The city and county were named for William Alexander Aitken, a partner of the American Fur Company and chief factor of the company's regional operations in the early 19th century. The development of industries attracted people to the town. In the late 19th and early 20th century, a massive wave of immigrants, mostly ... Geographic Names Information System
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names. Data were collected in two phases. Although a third phase was considered, which would have handled name changes where local usages differed from maps, it was never begun. The database is part of a system that includes topographic map names and bibliographic references. The names of books and historic maps that confirm the feature or place name are cited. Variant names, alternatives to official federal names for a feature, are also recor ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Area Code 320
Area code 320 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for most of the central part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. The numbering plan area (NPA) excludes the Twin Cities metro region. The area code was created in 1996 in a split of area code 612. History In 1995, US West advised the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) that substantial demand for telephone numbers in Minneapolis/St. Paul required dividing numbering plan area 612 with the introduction of a new area code, 320, outside of the metro area. The split became effective on March 17, 1996, with a period of permissive dialing of 612 or 320 ending on September 15 for calls to a 320 destination. The Twin Cities retained the existing area code. Some exchanges, in Red Wing, Wabasha, Goodhue, Lake City, and White Rock in the south-eastern corner of the area were migrated to area code 507 instead of receiving a new area code. This required changing central office predix and station number chan ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
