Glenwood (South Boston, Virginia)
Glenwood is a historic plantation estate located at 7040 Philpott Road ( United States Route 58) southwest of South Boston, Halifax County, Virginia. The main house was completed about 1861, and is a distinctive combination of mid-19th century architectural styles. The main house is a two-story wood-frame structure, with a hip roof. The cornice has Italianate brackets, and the main entrance is framed by sidelights and a transom window with Gothic tracery. The interior features an fine Gothic staircase. Attached to the rear of the house by a hyphen is an earlier 19th-century log house. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. South Boston, Virginia
South Boston, formerly Boyd's Ferry, is a town in Halifax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 8,142 at the 2010 census, down from 8,491 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous town in Halifax County. History On December 8, 1796, the Virginia General Assembly authorized eight commissioners to establish at Boyd's Ferry on the south side of the Dan River the town of South Boston, named for Boston, Massachusetts. Because this site proved vulnerable to flooding, it was eventually abandoned in favor of a new settlement on the north side. By the 1850s the Richmond and Danville Railroad passed through South Boston, which eventually developed into an important market for brightleaf tobacco. In 1884 it was incorporated as a town; in 1960 it became an independent city; and in 1995 it made history by being the first city in Virginia to revert to town status and rejoined Halifax County. United States Route 58
U.S. Route 58 (US 58) is an east–west U.S. Highway that runs for from U.S. Route 25E just northwest of Harrogate, Tennessee, to U.S. Route 60 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Until 1996, when the Cumberland Gap Tunnel opened, US 58 ran only inside the commonwealth of Virginia (and it now runs only about 1 mile outside of Virginia into Tennessee before terminating). It was then extended southwest along a short piece of former US 25E, which no longer enters Virginia, to end at the new alignment in Tennessee. For most of its alignment, it closely parallels Virginia's southern border with North Carolina. State Route 383 (SR 383) is overlaid on U.S. Route 58 in Tennessee.
