Glenelg, South Australia
Glenelg is a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Located on the shore of Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent, it has become a tourist destination due to its beach and many attractions, home to several hotels and dozens of restaurants. Established in 1836, it is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia. It was named after Charles Grant, 1st Baron Glenelg, Lord Glenelg, a member of Cabinet of the United Kingdom, British Cabinet and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Through Lord Glenelg the name derives from Glenelg, Highland, Scotland. H Type Adelaide Tram
The H type Adelaide tram, popularly known as ''Glenelg tram'' or ''Bay tram'', was a class of 30 trams built by A. Pengelley & Co, Adelaide in 1929 for use on the newly converted Glenelg tram line. They remained in regular revenue service for 77 years before being replaced by Bombardier Flexity Classic trams in 2006. History The 30 cars (numbers 351 to 380) were designated ''Type H'' by the Municipal Tramways Trust; "H type" is now in common usage among tramway enthusiasts. The southern mud oyster, Australian flat oyster, native flat oyster, native mud oyster, or angasi oyster (''Ostrea angasi''), is endemic to southern Australia, ranging from Western Australia to southeast New South Wales and around Tasmania. ''Ostrea angasi'' superficially resembles ''Ostrea edulis'' and both species may be referred to with the name "flat oyster". The term ''oyster reef'' refers to dense aggregations of oysters that form large colonial communities. Because oyster larvae need to settle on hard substrates, new oyster reefs may form on stone or other hard marine debris. Patawalonga River
The Patawalonga River is a river located in the western suburbs of the Adelaide metropolitan area, in the Australian state of South Australia. It drains an area of flat, swampy lands formerly known as the Cowandilla Plains or The Reedbeds (Adelaide), The Reedbeds, which in the mid-20th century were drained by River Torrens#Flood mitigation, engineering works, enabling the establishment of Adelaide Airport and the development of residential housing. Its catchment area is in the western Adelaide Hills, and it drains into Gulf St Vincent south of Glenelg, South Australia, Glenelg. The Barcoo Outlet was completed in 2001 to divert dirty stormwater from the river mouth and out to sea and creating a small lake or lagoon at the river mouth instead. Kaurna People
The Kaurna people (, ; also Coorna, Kaura, Gaurna and other variations) are a group of Aboriginal people whose traditional lands include the Adelaide Plains of South Australia. They were known as the Adelaide tribe by the early settlers. Kaurna culture and language were almost completely destroyed within a few decades of the British colonisation of South Australia in 1836. The Adelaide Plains (Kaurna name Tarndanya) is a plain in South Australia lying between the coast ( Gulf St Vincent) on the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges on the east. The southernmost tip of the plain is in the southern seaside suburbs of Adelaide around Brighton at the foot of the O'Halloran Hill escarpment with the south Hummocks Range and Wakefield River roughly approximating the northern boundary.
