Glascock County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,884, making it the fourth-least populous county in Georgia. The county seat is Gibson. The county was created on December 19, 1857. History The county is named after Thomas Glascock, a soldier in the War of 1812, general in the First Seminole War and U.S. representative. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. It is the fourth-smallest county in Georgia by area, behind Clayton, Rockdale, and Clarke counties. The vast majority of Glascock County is located in the Upper Ogeechee River sub-basin of the Ogeechee River basin, with just the very northeastern corner of the county, northeast of State Route 80, located in the Brier Creek sub-basin of the Savannah River basin. Thomas Glascock
Thomas Glascock Jr. (October 21, 1790 – May 19, 1841) was an American politician, soldier and lawyer. His wife was Catherine Rector. Early years Thomas Glascock, Jr. was born in Augusta, Georgia, Augusta, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia on October 21, 1790, seven years after the end of the American War of Independence. He studied law, gained admission to the state bar, and began practicing law in a career path that would underpin his later political service. Both his father and grandfather had distinguished themselves in military and political service to the new United States. Brigadier General Thomas Glascock Sr. rescued Casimir Pulaski, Count Casimir Pulaski from the Siege of Savannah, while serving in Georgia in the Virginia Dragoons during the American Revolution. Mitchell is a town in Glascock County, Georgia, United States. The population was 199 at the 2010 census, and 153 in 2020. Mitchell is home to the Mitchell Depot Historical Museum. History Mitchell had its start in the 1880s, when the railroad was extended to that point. The community was named after R. M. Mitchell, a railroad official. State Route 171 (SR 171) is a state highway that runs south-to-north through portions of Treutlen, Emanuel, Johnson, Jefferson, Glascock, and Warren counties in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Route description SR 171 begins at an intersection with US 221/ SR 56, northeast of Soperton, in Treutlen County. US 221/SR 171 run concurrent for just over half of SR 171's length. A little ways north of that point, the two highways cross into Emanuel County and then, the Ohoopee River. They meet US 80/ SR 26. They curve to the northwest, then curve back to the northeast.
