Gintarė Scheidt
Gintarė Volungevičiūtė-Scheidt (born 12 November 1982) is an Olympic medal-winning dinghy sailor from Lithuania. Career Growing up in Kaunas, she frequently went to the Kaunas Reservoir yacht club, where her uncle worked. Growing fond of sailing, she decided at an early age to take up the sport. Volungevičiūtė competed in the Olympic debut series for the women's single-handed dinghy class, the Laser Radial, during the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. She was the only sailor in the Lithuanian 2008 Olympic team. Volungevičiūtė won the 4th and 5th fleet races in the Olympic Laser Radial series, as well as the medal race, the last (10th), winning the silver medal. During a test event for the Olympics China held in 2007, Volungevičiūtė met Brazilian sailor Robert Scheidt, a two-time Laser gold medalist – who would also win a medal in 2008, in the Star class. Star (keelboat)
The Star is a one-design racing keelboat for two people designed by Francis Sweisguth in 1910. The Star was an Olympic keelboat class from 1932 through to 2012, the last year keelboats appeared at the Summer Olympics. It is sloop-rigged, with a mainsail larger in proportional size than any other boat of its length. Unlike most modern racing boats, it does not use a spinnaker when sailing downwind. Instead, when running downwind a whisker pole is used to hold the jib out to windward for correct wind flow. Early Stars were built from wood, but modern boats are generally made of fiberglass. Virgilijus Alekna
Virgilijus Alekna (; 13 February 1972) is a Lithuanian former discus thrower and politician. He won medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, including two golds. After retiring from athletics, Alekna was elected to the national parliament, the Seimas, in 2016. He has three children – Martynas Alekna, the discus world record holder Mykolas Alekna, and Gabrielė Aleknaite. Athletics career Alekna has won two gold medals in the Summer Olympics in the discus throw, the first was in 2000 and the second in 2004. Europe Dinghy
The Europe is a one-person dinghy designed in Belgium in 1960 by Alois Roland as a class legal Moth dinghy. The design later changed into its own one-design class. The dinghy is ideal for sailors weighing 50–85 kilos. The hull is made of fibre glass and weighs 45 kg, fully rigged 60 kg. The dinghy is tapering in the stem and round in the bottom. The sail is made of dacron. The mast is made of carbon fibre and specially designed to the sailor. A soft mast is best for light sailors, while heavier sailors use stiffer masts. Sails are also specially designed according to mast stiffness and crew weight. The Europe was introduced as an Olympic class in the 1992 Summer Olympics as the women's single-handed dinghy. Kiel Week
The Kiel Week () or Kiel Regatta is an annual sailing event in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is considered to be one of the largest sailing events globally, and also the largest summer festivals in Northern Europe, attracting millions of people every year from all over Germany and neighbouring countries. Together with the Trofeo Princesa Sofía, Semaine Olympique Française, and Allianz Regatta regattas, Kiel Week is part of the Sailing World Cup in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The Sailing World Championships (formerly ISAF Sailing World Championships) are World championships in sailing for the 10 events contested at the Summer Olympics, organized by World Sailing (formerly ISAF) and held every four years since 2003.
