Gillbeea
''Gillbeea'' is a genus of three species of Australasian rainforest trees from the family Cunoniaceae. Botanical science has formally published , the names and descriptions of one species endemic to New Guinea and two species endemic to the Wet Tropics rainforests of northeastern Queensland, Australia. These two Wet Tropics, NE. Qld species each only grow naturally in different tablelands rainforest regions, separated from each other for millions of years by a relatively narrow belt of drier non–rainforest landscape. Naming and classification In 1865, European science formally published the name and description of this genus using John Dallachy's northeastern Queensland ''Gillbeea adenopetala'' type specimen collection, authored by Melbourne based German–Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. Cunoniaceae
Cunoniaceae is a family of 27 genera and about 335 species of woody plants in the order Oxalidales, mostly found in the tropical and wet temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere. The greatest diversity of genera are in Australia and Tasmania (15 genera), New Guinea (9 genera), and New Caledonia (7 genera). The family is also present in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Malesia, the islands of the South Pacific, Madagascar and surrounding islands. the family is absent from mainland Asia except from Peninsular Malaysia, and almost absent from mainland Africa apart from two species from Southern Africa (''Cunonia capensis'', '' Platylophus trifoliatus''). Ferdinand Von Mueller
Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller, (german: Müller; 30 June 1825 – 10 October 1896) was a German-Australian physician, geographer, and most notably, a botanist. He was appointed government botanist for the then colony of Victoria (Australia) by Governor Charles La Trobe in 1853, and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. He also founded the National Herbarium of Victoria. He named many Australian plants. Early life Mueller was born at Rostock, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. After the early death of his parents, Frederick and Louisa, his grandparents gave him a good education in Tönning, Schleswig. Apprenticed to a chemist at the age of 15, he passed his pharmaceutical examinations and studied botany under Professor Ernst Ferdinand Nolte (1791–1875) at Kiel University. Ruurd Dirk Hoogland
Ruurd Dirk Hoogland (1922 Leeuwarden - 18 November 1994 Paris) was a Dutch-born explorer and naturalist, who migrated to Australia and made numerous botanical expeditions to New Guinea, Oceania and Europe. He was an expert on the family Cunoniaceae. He received his university education in Groningen and Leiden. He earned his doctorate in 1952 with a review of the genus Dillenia under Professor van Steenis and in that year he joined the Australian CSIRO in the Division of Land Research in Canberra as a botanist initially focusing on the then Australian "dependency" of Papua New Guinea. Subsequently, his field work included expeditions to remote Australian territories such as Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands, and to other Commonwealth countries including Sri Lanka and Malaysia. He transferred from CSIRO to the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University, but was forced to "retire" after contracting Myasthenia gravis. Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants, also known as RFK, is an identification key giving details—including images, taxonomy, descriptions, range, habitat, and other information—of almost all species of flowering plants (i.e. trees, shrubs, vines, forbs, grasses and sedges, epiphytes, palms and pandans) found in tropical rainforests of Australia, with the exception of most orchids which are treated in a separate key called Australian Tropical Rainforest Orchids (see External links section). The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is an online database of all published names of Australian vascular plants. It covers all names, whether current names, synonyms or invalid names. The Daintree Rainforest is a region on the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Mossman and Cairns. Atherton Tableland
The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. The principal river flowing across the plateau is the Barron River (Australia), Barron River. It was dammed to form an irrigation reservoir named Lake Tinaroo.
