Gilford, New Hampshire
Gilford is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,699 at the 2020 census, up from 7,126 at the 2010 census. Situated on Lake Winnipesaukee, Gilford is home to Governors Island, Ellacoya State Beach, Belknap Mountain State Forest, Gunstock Mountain Resort, and the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion, a seasonal outdoor concert venue. The lakeside village of Glendale lies within Gilford's borders. History Settled in 1778 and originally a part of Gilmanton, the town was first called Gunstock Parish. In 1812, Captain Lemuel B. Mason, who had fought in the 1781 Battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War and subsequently retired to Gunstock Parish, successfully proposed incorporation of a new town to be named Guilford after that battle. Kimball Castle
Kimball Castle is the former summer estate of railroad magnate Benjamin Ames Kimball. It is located on a hill overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee in the town of Gilford, New Hampshire, United States. Although portions of the Kimball's original estate have been subdivided, much of it remains conservation land managed by the town. The subdivided portion on which the -story medieval-style castle stands is privately owned and no longer part of the Charlotte Kimball trust. History Benjamin Kimball, a director of railroad companies operating in the region, built the castle and estate outbuildings beginning in 1894, and used it as his summer estate until his death in 1920, in his home in Concord, New Hampshire, Concord. The castle was built by Italian stonemasons using local granite and materials imported from Europe; its construction cost was about $50,000. Belknap Mountain
Belknap Mountain is a mountain located in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States, south of Lake Winnipesaukee. Like the county, the mountain and the associated surrounding Belknap Mountains are named after Jeremy Belknap (1744–1798), a renowned preacher, historian, and author of ''The History of New Hampshire''. The mountain is within Belknap Mountain State Forest. The peak of Belknap Mountain is the highest point in the county. Although of only modest elevation, the isolation of the Belknap Mountains gives Belknap Mountain of relative height above the low ground separating it from the White Mountains, making it one of the fifty most topographically prominent peaks in New England. Gunstock Mountain
Gunstock Mountain is the second highest peak in the Belknap Mountains of central New Hampshire with an elevation greater than 2240 feet (683 m). It is located north of Belknap Mountain, the highest point in the range. It is home to the Gunstock Mountain Resort ski area. The ski resort has been written up in national ski magazines for its views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Gunstock Mountain stands within the watershed of the Merrimack River, which drains into the Gulf of Maine in Massachusetts. The east side of the mountain, on which the ski resorted is located, drains into Poorfarm Brook, then into Lake Winnipesaukee, the Winnipesaukee River, and the Merrimack. Battle Of Guilford Court House
The Battle of Guilford Court House was fought on 15 March 1781 during the American Revolutionary War, near Greensboro, North Carolina. A 2,100-man British force under the command of Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis defeated Major General Nathanael Greene's 4,500 Americans. The British Army suffered considerable casualties, with estimates as high as 27% of their total force. The battle was "the largest and most hotly contested action" in the American Revolution's southern theater. Before the battle, the British had great success in conquering much of Georgia and South Carolina with the aid of strong Loyalist factions and thought that North Carolina might be within their grasp. The British were in the process of heavy recruitment in North Carolina when this battle put an end to their recruiting drive. Gilmanton, New Hampshire
Gilmanton is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,945 at the 2020 census. Gilmanton includes the villages of Gilmanton Corners and Gilmanton Ironworks. The town became well known in the 1950s after it was rumored that the popular novel ''Peyton Place'', written by resident Grace Metalious, was based on the town. History Gilmanton was incorporated in 1727. First known as "Gilmantown", the town was home to the Gilman family, originally settled at Exeter. BankNH Pavilion (originally known as Meadowbrook Farm) is an outdoor amphitheatre located near Lake Winnipesaukee in Gilford, New Hampshire, United States. Opening in 1996, the venue seats nearly 9,000 guests. It seats 5,997 under a covered pavilion, 540 reserved lawn seats and 2,850 general admission lawn seats. History The land was originally owned by the Miller family, which used the property for summer vacations, weekend excursions, and general family entertainment.
