Gilberto Mendoza, Jr.
Gilberto Jesus "Gilbertico" Mendoza (born 25 December 1970) is a Panamanian sports administrator. Mendoza is, since December of 2015, the president of the Panama based World Boxing Association, which is, along with the United States based International Boxing Federation, the Mexico based World Boxing Council and the Puerto Rico based World Boxing Organization, one of the four major international boxing championship recognizing groups. WBA president On 28 May 2021, it was announced that Mendoza had been reelected as president of the WBA for the period from 2021 to 2025. The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is an international professional boxing organization based in Panama. The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Founded in the United States in 1921 by 13 state representatives as the NBA, it is the oldest major organization regulating fights. In 1962, it changed its name in recognition of boxing's growing popularity around the world and began to admit other nations as members. The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is one of four major organizations recognized by the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) which sanctions professional boxing bouts. The others are the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). Gilberto Mendoza
Gilberto Mendoza (March 30, 1943 – March 11, 2016) was a Venezuelan-Panamanian former amateur boxer and sports executive who served as president of the World Boxing Association (WBA), the oldest of the four major professional boxing world championship recognizing organizations. He served from 1982 until stepping down in December 2015. He continued as President Emeritus until his death. Early life Mendoza was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela in 1943. He grew up under difficult circumstances and found success playing baseball and soccer. However, boxing became his passion. He was a bantamweight amateur fighter for three years while attending college in Caracas. He moved from Venezuela to the United States to pursue his master's degree at the University of Toledo.
