Gerngroß Department Store
Gerngroß or Gerngross is a department store in Vienna on the Mariahilferstraße in the city's Neubau, Seventh District. Origins Alfred Abraham Gerngroß (1844–1908) from Eckental, Forth near Nuremberg, who had learned the drapers trade from August Herzmansky, who had founded, in 1863, a prominent Viennese drapery. Then on 26 September 1879, with his younger brother Hugo (1857–1929), Alfred founded his own store on the corner of Mariahilferstrasse 48 and the Kirchengasse. After a period of competition with his former employer, August Herzmansky, the two companies tried to work together, but this did not prosper, and the collaboration ceased again in 1881. Through subsequent success, the company was able to acquire 13 neighboring houses over time. In 1883, the company was transformed into a company, the business developed into the largest department store in Vienna and subsequently the largest department store in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Herzmansky was a department store in Vienna. It was founded by the Austrian Silesian merchant in 1863. The department store was located at Mariahilfer Strasse 26–30 / Stiftgasse 3 in the 7th district of Vienna, Neubau. A branch of the Peek & Cloppenburg chain has been in its place since 1998. The store became the largest drapery/department store in the Austro-Hungarian Empire by 1892. After August's death, his nephews and later other relatives took over the management, with various expansions and renovations taking place over the years. Shortly before the Nazis came to power, the company was sold to the Austrian Jewish merchant Max Delfiner. The store was "Aryanized" during the Nazi period but was later returned to its rightful owner, Max Delfiner, in 1948. After several changes in ownership, mergers, and modernizations, the Herzmansky department store closed in 1997.
