Germán Mesa
Germán Mesa Fresneda (born May 12, 1967, in Havana) is a Cuban baseball manager and former player. A shortstop who played for the Industriales of the Cuban National Series and for the Cuba national baseball team, Mesa was known as "El Imán" ("The Magnet") for his superior fielding skills, compared by international scouts to the likes of major leaguers Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel. He was also an exceptional hitter and base runner who led Cuban baseball in hits, triples, and stolen bases during his career. He has managed in the National Series, and was named skipper of the Cuban national team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Baseball At The 1999 Pan American Games
Baseball at the 1999 Pan American Games was held between July 25 and August 2 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. A total of nine teams competed: Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States. The primary venue for this competition was CanWest Global Park, while Stonewall Quarry Park in Stonewall, Manitoba, was used as a secondary venue. Cuba entered the competition as the seven-time defending champions, having won each gold medal dating back to 1971. They successfully defended their title, with the United States finishing second. The 1999 games were the first time professional baseball players were allowed to participate in the Pan American Games, and the top two teams qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics. In baseball statistics, a hit (denoted by H), also called a base hit, is credited to a batting (baseball), batter when the batter safely reaches or passes first base after hitting the ball into fair ball, fair territory with neither the benefit of an error (baseball), error nor a fielder's choice. Omar Vizquel
Omar Enrique Vizquel González (; born April 24, 1967), nicknamed "Little O", is a Venezuelan former professional baseball shortstop. During his 24-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career, Vizquel played for the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays. In Venezuela he played for Leones del Caracas. Widely considered one of baseball's all-time best fielding shortstops, Vizquel won 11 Gold Glove Awards, including nine consecutive from 1993 to 2001. Among shortstops, his .9847 fielding percentage is the highest all-time, he is the all-time leader in games played, and the all-time leader in double plays turned. Ozzie Smith
Osborne Earl Smith (born December 26, 1954) is an American former professional baseball player. Nicknamed "The Wizard of Oz", Smith played shortstop for the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball, winning the National League Gold Glove Award for defensive play at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons. A 15-time All-Star, Smith accumulated 2,460 hits and 580 stolen bases during his career, and won the National League Silver Slugger Award as the best hitter at shortstop in 1987. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2002. He was also elected to the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 2014. Cuban National Series
The Cuban National Series (, or SNB) is a domestic baseball competition in Cuba. Formed after the dissolution of the Cuban League in the wake of the Cuban Revolution, the National Series is a part of the Cuban baseball league system. For most of its existence, the National Series has existed as the top-level winter league in Cuba. From 2022 to 2024, it operated as a summer league, with the top six National Series teams qualifying for the Cuban Elite League (LEB). Central American Games
The Central American Games () are a multi-sport regional championships event, held quadrennial (every 4 years), typically in the first year after Summer Olympics. The Games are open for member federations of the Central American Sports Organization (Spanish: Organización Deportiva Centroamericana) ORDECA in Central American countries. (in Spanish) The Games have had an equivalent to the Olympic Flame, being ignited in Q'umarkaj, one of the ancient cultural Mayan centers located in El Quiché, Guatemala. Baseball At The 1990 Goodwill Games
Baseball was featured at the 1990 Goodwill Games. The tournament was contested from July 26 to 31 between eight national teams: hosts United States, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Soviet Union. All the games were played at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma. This tournament marked the Soviet Union baseball team's first appearance in an international competition. Cuba won the gold medal by defeating Japan in the final, while the United States secured the bronze after defeating Canada. Puerto Rico finished fifth, followed by Chinese Taipei in sixth, Mexico in seventh, and the Soviet Union in eighth. This was the first and only occasion that baseball was included in the Goodwill Games program. Goodwill Games
The Goodwill Games were an international sports competition created by Ted Turner in reaction to the political troubles surrounding the Olympic Games of the 1980s. In 1979, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan caused the United States and other Western countries to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, an act reciprocated when the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries (with the exception of Romania) boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The idea came to Turner in 1984 during his visit to Moscow. He was disappointed with the boycott, evaluating it as a negative outcome for both sides in the conflict. The magnate also believed that it was an opportune moment to create alternative high-level competitions that could “steal” some of the success from the Olympics.
