Gerald Klug
Gerald Klug (born 13 November 1968) is an Austrian jurist and politician who served as minister of transport, innovation and technology in 2016. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he previously served as minister of defence and sports from 2013 to 2016. Early life and education Klug was born in Graz on 13 November 1968. After graduating from technical college in Graz and vocational school he served in the Austrian army from 1987 to 1988. He received a law degree from Karl-Franzens University in 2001. Career Klug is a member of the Social Democratic Party and chairman of the party in the Austrian Federal Council, Austria’s Upper House. He was first elected to the council in 2005. He was appointed federal minister of defence and sports in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Werner Faymann on 11 March 2013, replacing Norbert Darabos in the post. Norbert Darabos
Norbert Darabos (born 31 May 1964) is an Austrian politician. Currently, he serves as the president of the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR). From 2007 to 2013, he served as Minister of National Defence under the chancellors Gusenbauer and Faymann. From 2015 to 2016, he was secretary general of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). He is married and has two children. Personal life and political career Darabos was born in Vienna. From 1982 to 1988 he studied history and political science at the University of Vienna, where he graduated in 1988. In 1987/88 he made his Alternative civilian service. The Federal Council (, ) is the upper house of the Austrian Parliament, representing the nine States of Austria at the federal level. As part of a bicameral legislature alongside the National Council, it can be compared with an upper house or a senate. In fact, however, it is far less powerful than the National Council: although it has to approve every new law decided for by this lower chamber, the latter can – in most cases – overrule the Federal Council's refusal to approve.
