Georgia Tech Alumni Association
The Georgia Tech Alumni Association is the official alumni association for the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Originally known as the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association, it was chartered in June 1908 and incorporated in 1947. Its offices have been in the L. W. Robert, Jr., L. W. "Chip" Robert, Jr. Alumni House on North Avenue (Atlanta), North Avenue since 1979. Its first presidents (starting in 1921) were William H. Glenn, followed by L. W. Robert, Jr. and Y. Frank Freeman. The current president of the alumni association is Dene Sheheane. Sheheane succeeds Joseph Irwin who previously held the position since 1999. Other notable presidents include Cherry Logan Emerson (engineer), Cherry L. Emerson, Bobby Jones (golfer), Bobby Jones, and Frank Arthur Hooper, Frank A. Hooper. An alumni association or alumnae association is an association of graduates or, more broadly, of former students ( alumni). In the United Kingdom and the United States, alumni of universities, colleges, schools (especially independent schools), fraternities, and sororities often form groups with alumni from the same organization. These associations often organize social events, publish newsletters or magazines, and raise funds for the organization. Many provide a variety of benefits and services that help alumni maintain connections to their educational institution and fellow graduates. Georgia Tech Foundation
The Georgia Tech Foundation provides financial assistance to the Georgia Institute of Technology. It was founded in 1932 and chartered under the tax laws of the United States as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. In 2013, the Foundation provided $130.8 million in support of the Institute, including $20.7 million in scholarships, fellowships and loan funds to 3,563 students. As of June 30, 2013, the Foundation had $1.729 billion in assets. In 2013, the Foundation provided financial support for 200 students to participate in the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program, a transforming scholarship program for Georgia residents whose family income falls below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Georgia Institute of Technology has graduated a number of athletes. This includes graduates, non-graduate former students and current students of Georgia Tech who are notable for their achievements within athletics, sometimes before or after their time at Georgia Tech. Fred Storey (academic)
Frederick Lewis Storey (March 3, 1932 – December 2, 2019) was a Canadian curler from Calgary. He won three World Curling Championships and three Brier Championships playing as lead on the Ron Northcott rink. Storey grew up in Empress, Alberta and moved to Calgary in high school, and won a provincial school boys title for Mount Royal in 1951, and finished runner up at that year's school boy championship (now the Canadian Junior Curling Championships) playing for the Bob Harper rink. He also played baseball in high school. At the time of the 1960 Brier, he worked for Pacific Petroleums Pacific Petroleums Limited was a Canadian integrated petroleum company that existed between 1939 and 1979. Blake is a surname which originated from Old English. Its derivation is uncertain; it could come from "blac", a nickname for someone who had dark hair or skin, or from "blaac", a nickname for someone with pale hair or skin. Another theory, presumably in the belief it is a Welsh patronymic in origin, for which there is no evidence, was that it is a corruption of "Ap Lake", meaning "Son of Lake".
