Georges Baptiste François Allix
Georges Baptiste François Allix (27 July 1808 in Gasny - 29 May 1881 in the same commune) was a military engineer in the French Navy. In particular, he was the designer of the screw frigate ''La Souveraine'', launched in Lorient on 3 June 1856. Biography He entered the École polytechnique in November 1827 became a pupil of the ''École d'application du Génie maritime'' on 9 November 1829, then a admitted pupil on 1 January 1831. Rising through the ranks of engineer, he was appointed engineer 1st class on 27 September 1852. In 1836, he built the ''Cigale'' and the ''Belette''. In 1846, he designed the hull of the yacht- aviso ''Comte d'Eu'', intended for King Louis-Philippe. This steamer was launched at the shipyards of Augustin Normand (known as the Normand shipyards), father of Jacques-Augustin Normand ( fr), on 20 December 1846. Aviso
An ''aviso'' was originally a kind of dispatch boat or "advice boat", carrying orders before the development of effective remote communication. The term, derived from the Portuguese and Spanish word for "advice", "notice" or "warning", an ''aviso'', was later adopted by the French and Portuguese navies to classify their medium-sized warships designed for colonial service. The term continued to be used in the French Navy to classify the patrol frigates until 2012, when the remaining ships of the class were reclassified as offshore patrol ships. It is equivalent to the modern use of "sloop" in other countries. Stanislas Charles Henri Dupuy de Lôme (; 15 October 18161 February 1885) was a French naval architect. He was the son of a naval officer and was born in Ploemeur near Lorient, Brittany, in western France. He was educated at the École Polytechnique and ENSTA. He was particularly active during the 1840–1870 period. After finishing his professional education, he went to England about 1842, and made a thorough study of iron shipbuilding and steam navigation.
