George Washington Carver High School (Cumberland, Maryland)
George Washington Carver High School was the high school for black children in Cumberland, Maryland prior to the integration of public schools in 1955. History In 1864 the state legislature provided both funds, and a means for local government to allocate taxes and private donations in order to fund schools for negroes. A public school for African-Americans in Cumberland named Mary Hoye School was run within a colored YMCA on Independence Street. In 1923 a new school was built on Frederick Street to serve the growing population. In 1941 Principal Bracey held an election amongst students and faculty to choose a new name for the school. The choice was made to name the school after inventor and educator George Washington Carver. Since the quality of educational facilities for black children in surrounding areas was inadequate, many African-Americans from surrounding areas in Maryland and West Virginia sent their children to Carver. Cumberland is a U.S. city in and the county seat of Allegany County, Maryland. It is the primary city of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 19,076. Located on the Potomac River, Cumberland is a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Historically Cumberland was known as the "Queen City", as it was once the second largest in the state. George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver ( 1864 – January 5, 1943) was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve types of soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow other crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful. Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. Allegany College of Maryland (or ACM) is a public community college in Cumberland, Maryland. It was previously known as Allegany Community College. The college was founded in 1961 and is accredited by the Middle State Commission on Higher Education. The college offers 31 two-year degree programs, 30 certificate programs, and 10 letters of recognitions.
