George Town, Bahamas
George Town is a town located on the island of Great Exuma in the Exuma district of the The Bahamas, Bahamas. It had a population of 2,488 based on 2012 estimates. The Government Building is a popular tourist attraction inspired by the architecture of the Government House in Nassau, Bahamas, Nassau. The deep water of Elizabeth Harbour is a popular spot for sea-faring travelers. Pirates used the harbor in the 17th century and plantation owners from Virginia settled the town in the 18th century. During World War II the US Navy used the port. Great Exuma
Exuma is a district of The Bahamas, consisting of over 365 islands and cays. The largest of the islands is Great Exuma, which is 37 mi (60 km) in length and joined to another island, Little Exuma, by a small bridge. The capital and largest town in the district is George Town (population 1,437). It was founded 1793 and located on Great Exuma. Near the town, but on Little Exuma, the Tropic of Cancer runs across Pelican Beach lending it another name: Tropic of Cancer Beach. Its white sand and turquoise waters make it a world-famous destination. The entire island chain is 130 mi (209 km) long and 72 sq mi (187 km²) in area. Districts Of The Bahamas
Local government in the Bahamas exists at two levels: 32 districts and 41 towns. The boundaries of districts are defined by the First Schedule of The Bahamas Local Government Act 1996 (as amended by law and declarations of the Minister responsible for Family Island Affairs), defined with reference to parliamentary constituency boundaries. The Second Schedule lists 13 districts which are divided into town areas. Towns are governed by directly elected town committees. Aliv is a Bahamian telecommunications brand operated by NewCo15Limited which is 48.25% owned by Cable Bahamas and 51.75% by the Bahamian public. Their chief executive is Franklyn Butler II. It is the second mobile telecommunications company licensed in The Bahamas. Since there was only one mobile carrier in the Bahamas previously, mobile number portability was not introduced until April 2017. BTC Bahamas and Aliv have a roaming agreement which allows customers of either telecommunications provider to use their phone when out of range of the primary providers cellular tower, but within range of the roaming provider's tower. Roaming may or may not incur charges for the cellular subscriber. Run For Pompey
Run for Pompey is an annual race held in Great Exuma, The Bahamas. Named after Pompey, a 32-year-old Bahamian slave in Exuma, who led a movement in 1830 in attempt to stop the transfer of 77 slaves that would have separated families. The movement helped to stop the transfer and is widely recognized in the Bahamas as a substantial moment in Bahamian slaves' fight for freedom. Proceeds from the event are used for scholarships. There have been various courses for the race, but primarily it starts and ends in the settlement of George Town.
