George Perley Phenix
George Perley Phenix (1864–1930), was an American educator and university president. He served as the fourth president of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University), a historically Black university. He was the namesake of George P. Phenix High School, a segregated public secondary school for African-Americans affiliated with Hampton Institute. Biography Phenix was born in September 1864 in Portland, Maine. He attended Colby College, where he received a D.S. degree (1883) and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation Phenix worked as an instructor of the natural sciences at the State Normal School in New Britain, Connecticut, before he became a principal of the State Normal School at Willimantic. He was married to Maria Elizabeth Stevens, and together they had son George Spencer Phenix. Hampton University is a private, historically black, research university in Hampton, Virginia, United States. Founded in 1868 as Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School, it was established by Black and White leaders of the American Missionary Association after the American Civil War to provide education to freedmen. The campus houses the Hampton University Museum, which is the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the United States and the oldest museum in the commonwealth of Virginia. First led by former Union General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, Hampton University's main campus is located on in Hampton, Virginia, on the banks of the Hampton River. The university offers 90 degree programs, including 50 bachelor's degree programs, 25 master's degree programs, and 9 doctoral programs.
