George M. Shelton
George Matthew Shelton (December 23, 1877 – January 18, 1949) was a soldier in the United States Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the Philippine–American War. Shelton joined the Army from Billington, Texas in May 1898, and retired with the rank of Major in September 1921. Medal of Honor citation Rank and organization: Private, Company I, 23d U.S. Infantry. Place and date: At La Paz, Leyte, Philippine Islands, April 26, 1900. Entered service at: Billington, Tex. Birth: Brownwood, Tex. Date of issue: March 10, 1902. Brownwood, Texas
Brownwood is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,862 as of th2020 census Brownwood is in the Texas Hill Country and is home to Howard Payne University, which was founded in 1889. History The original site of the Brown County seat of Brownwood was east of Pecan Bayou. A dispute arose over land and water rights, and the settlers were forced to find a new location. Greenleaf Fisk donated to relocate the county seat to the west side of the bayou, on what is now the current site of Brownwood, and 100 additional acres for county use. The town was incorporated in 1884. During the Second World War, Brownwood was the location of U.S. Army Camp Bowie, which had a peak complement of over 80,000 soldiers. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is an American nonprofit educational and research organization dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. It was founded in Austin, Texas, United States, on March 2, 1897. In November 2008, the TSHA moved its offices from Austin to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 2015, the offices were relocated again to the University of Texas at Austin. History On February 13, 1897, ten persons convened to discuss the creation of a nonprofit to promote Texas state history. George Pierce Garrison, chair of the University of Texas history department, led the organizational meeting establishing the association on March 2, 1893. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.
