George G. Kidwell
George Geddes Kidwell (February 14, 1884 – April 26, 1948) was an American labor leader and politician who served as secretary of the San Francisco Bakery Wagon Drivers' Union from 1917 to 1939 and as director of the California Department of Industrial Relations from 1939 to 1943. Communist Party USA, Communist Party journalist Al Richmond remembered Kidwell as a man "whose stature overshadowed his home base" in the Drivers' Union. Career During his career in organized labor, Kidwell gained a reputation as a radical sympathetic to industrial unionism. When Tom Mooney and Warren K. Billings were convicted for the Preparedness Day bombing and sentenced to death, Kidwell and other labor leaders like Hugo Ernst and Paul Scharrenberg (who later succeeded him as director of Industrial Relations) lobbied successfully to save them from execution. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) is a department of the government of the state of California which was initially created in 1927. The department is currently part of the Cabinet-level California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, and headquartered at the Elihu M. Harris State Office Building in Oakland. Harry Bridges
Harry Bridges (28 July 1901 – 30 March 1990) was an Australian-born American union leader, first with the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA). In 1937, he led several Pacific Coast chapters of the ILA to form a new union, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), expanding its ranks to include thousands of additional warehouse workers. He served as ILWU president for the next 40 years. Bridges rose to national fame as a key figure in the 1934 West Coast waterfront strike. He was designated a subversive alien by the U.S. government, with the goal of deporting him, but it was never achieved. He became an American citizen in 1945. He was then convicted by a federal jury for having lied about his Communist Party membership when applying for naturalization; however, the perjury conviction was overturned in 1953 by the Supreme Court because the original indictment against Bridges occurred outside the statute of limitations. Michael "Bloody Mike" Casey (September 21, 1860 – May 2, 1937) was an Irish-born American labor unionist and politician who served as San Francisco Commissioner of Public Works from 1902 to 1913 and as president of the San Francisco Teamsters' Union from 1900 until his death in 1937. Life and career Born in Elphin, County Roscommon, in Ireland, Casey emigrated with his family to the United States in 1871. When Michael was 12, the family settled in San Francisco.
