Genkurō
Genkurō (源九郎) is a shape-changing ''kitsune'' (fox-spirit) character who features prominently in the famous ''bunraku, jōruri'' and ''kabuki'' play ''Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura'' ("Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees"). Disguising himself as Satō Tadanobu, a retainer of Yoshitsune's, he rescues Yoshitsune's lover Shizuka Gozen from agents of Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoritomo (Yoshitsune's brother, from whom he is fleeing). In return, he is awarded a suit of armor, and also the great honor of Yoshitsune's name, "Genkurō", meaning Minamoto (源, ''gen'') ninth son (九郎, ''ku-rō''). As a kitsune, with no other name of his own revealed throughout the play, he is known only as "Tadanobu" and as "Genkurō". Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura
''Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura'' (義経千本桜), or ''Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees'', is a Japanese play, one of the three most popular and famous in the kabuki repertoire. Originally written in 1747 for the bunraku, jōruri puppet theater by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shōraku and Namiki Senryū I, it was adapted to kabuki the following year. Adapted to kabuki, the play was premièred in that mode in January 1748, in the city of Ise, Mie, Ise, in Mie Prefecture. Kataoka Nizaemon IV and Yamamoto Koheiji were two of the actors in this performance, playing Ginpei and Tadanobu/Genkurō respectively. The premiere in Edo was held at the Nakamura-za in May the same year, and in Osaka at the Naka no Shibai just a few months later in August. Satō Tadanobu
was a Japanese samurai of the late-Heian period. He was a follower of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. According to the '' Genpei Jōsuiki'', he was one of the , along with Kamata Morimasa, Kamata Mitsumasa, and Satō Tsugunobu. He was the younger brother of Tsugunobu, and their father was the Ōshū Fujiwara retainer Satō Motoharu. Tsugunobu and his brother Tadanobu "were 'given' to Yoshitsune by Fujiwara no Hidehira when Yoshitsune left Oshu to join Yoritomo." Battle Of Yashima
Battle of Yashima (屋島の戦い) was one of the battles of the Genpei War on March 22, 1185, in the Heian period. It occurred in Sanuki Province (Shikoku), which is now Takamatsu, Kagawa. Background Following a long string of defeats, the Taira clan retreated to Yashima, today's Takamatsu, just off the coast of Shikoku. Here they had a fortress, and an improvised palace for Emperor Antoku and the imperial regalia, which they had taken earlier in the war. Taira No Noritsune
was a military leader of the late Heian period of Japan. He was the son of Taira no Norimori. He fought in the Genpei War against the Minamoto clan. Genpei War Noritsune was a commander during the Genpei War. He fought in many battles including the battles of Mizushima and Dan-no-ura. He also fought in the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani, and killed Satō Tsugunobu in the Battle of Yashima.
