Gedenkstätte Heldenberg
The Heldenberg Memorial is an open-air pantheon in the grounds of the castle at Kleinwetzdorf, Heldenberg, Lower Austria. It houses busts and statues of Austrian rulers and military personnel and was set up in 1849 by Joseph Gottfried Pargfrieder, a major supplier to the imperial army, who claimed to be an illegitimate son of Emperor Joseph II. Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, an Austrian Army Field Marshal and national hero, died on January 5, 1858, after an accident in Milan. The Emperor wished that he be buried in the Capuchin crypt (the Imperial Crypt, Vienna, Imperial Crypt in Vienna), however, Radetzky had bequeathed his earthly remains, and the right to bury him, to Pargfrieder, who had settled his debts earlier. On 19 January 1858, Radetzky was buried at the Heldenberg memorial. He lies in a crypt under a monumental obelisk, together with Field Marshal Maximilian von Wimpffen and Pargfrieder. Walhalla Memorial
The Walhalla () is a hall of fame monument that honours laudable and distinguished people in German history"politicians, sovereigns, scientists and artists of the German tongue";Official Guide booklet, 2002, p. 3 While all new inductees since 1890 have been Germans or German-speakers, several earlier honorees came from outside modern Germany, which had not yet been established when the monument was built. Ruhmeshalle (Munich)
The Ruhmeshalle (, ) is a Doric order, Doric colonnade with a main range and two wings, designed by Leo von Klenze for Ludwig I of Bavaria. Built in 1853, it is situated on an ancient ledge above the Theresienwiese in Munich and was built as part of a complex which also includes the Bavariapark and the Bavaria statue. It is built of Kelheim limestone and is 68 metres long and 32 metres deep. With the construction and exhibition of Bust (sculpture), busts of important people from Bavaria, including Electoral Palatinate, the Palatinate, Franconia and Swabia, King Ludwig intended to create a hall of fame that honors laudable and distinguished people of his kingdom, as he did also in the Walhalla memorial for all of Germany. The Befreiungshalle (''"Hall of Liberation"'', ) is a neoclassical monument on the Michelsberg hill above the town of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It stands upstream of Regensburg on the river Danube at the confluence of the Danube and the Altmühl, i.e. the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal. It is just downstream of the Danube Gorge, towering above its lower end. It was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in the '' Befreiungskriege'' of 1813–1815. Maximilian Von Wimpffen
Maximilian, Freiherr (Baron) von Wimpffen (1770–1854) was a military commander who served in the Austrian army during the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. Although a competent field commander, he was above all noted for his excellent knowledge of military strategy and tactics, which made him a key member in the General Staff of the Imperial and Royal Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Early career Born in Westphalia in 1770, Wimpffen was admitted at the ''Wiener Neustadt'' Military Academy and graduated in 1786 to join ''Infanterie Regiment 9 Clerfayt''. He was remarked early on for his bravery at the siege of Belgrade, where he led a noted assault of the city, at the head of a column of volunteers. Heldenberg - Obelisk
Heldenberg is a small municipality in the district of Hollabrunn in Lower Austria, Austria, about 50 km north-west of Vienna. It is most notable for the Heldenberg Memorial. Geography The municipality was created in the 1970s as an administrative unit encompassing the villages ''Glaubendorf, Kleinwetzdorf, Grosswetzdorf, Unterthern,'' and ''Oberthern''.
