Gastão Luís Henrique Robert d'Escragnolle, Baron d'Escragnolle (Rio de Janeiro, April 16, 1821 — Rio de Janeiro, June 16, 1886) was a Brazilian politician, military figure and nobleman. He was son of French noblemen Alexandre Louis Marie de Robert, count d'Escragnolle (1785 — 1828), and Adelaïde Françoise Madeleine de Beaurepaire-Rohan (1785 - 1840). He was the ''aide-de-camp'' of Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias, Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias. He later abandoned his career as a lieutenant colonel to dedicate himself to politics, in the area of public administration. One of his sisters, Gabriela d'Escragnolle, married the painter Félix Taunay, Baron of Taunay, Félix Taunay; one of their sons is the famous novelist and politician Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay, Viscount of Taunay, Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay, the Viscount of Taunay. Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias (; 25 August 1803 – 7 May 1880), nicknamed "The Peacemaker" and "The Iron Duke", was an army officer, politician and monarchist of the Empire of Brazil. Like his father and uncles, Caxias pursued a military career. In 1823 he fought as a young officer in the Brazilian War for Independence against Portugal, then spent three years in Brazil's southernmost province, Cisplatina, as the government unsuccessfully resisted that province's secession in the Cisplatine War. Though his own father and uncles renounced Emperor Dom Pedro I during the protests of 1831, Caxias remained loyal. Félix Émile Taunay, Baron of Taunay (March 1, 1795 – April 10, 1881), was a French Brazilian painter, and drawing and Greek teacher. He was the father of famous writer and politician Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay, the Viscount of Taunay. Biography He was born in a house that belonged to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in the city of Montmorency. His father, Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, was also a painter, an aristocrat and a member of the then-newly founded Institut de France. Taunay and his father left France after Napoleon Bonaparte's defeat, invited to go to Brazil by the Marquis of Marialva, Pedro José Joaquim Vito de Meneses Coutinho. Alfredo Maria Adriano d'Escragnolle Taunay, Viscount of Taunay (February 22, 1843 – January 25, 1899), was a Brazilian writer, musician, professor, military engineer, historian, politician, sociology, sociologist and nobleman.
