Garryowen Football Club (Irish: ''Cumann Rugbaí Gharraí Eoin''), usually referred to as Garryowen, is a rugby union club from Limerick, Ireland. As at the 2024–25 season, it plays in Division 1A of the All-Ireland League. Historically, Garryowen has been one of the most successful clubs in Irish rugby union. History The club was formed in 1884. The founding members of the club were: * President W.L. Stokes * Secretary J. Gogarty * Treasurer M. L. Joyce * Captain J.O'Sullivan * Messrs. Patrick Stapleton, Tom Prendergast, J.O'Connor, J.G.O'Brien, Roche, Riordan, Pender, Gilligan and Dick Founding member of the club, W.L.Stokes, had a huge influence on the game in Limerick during the 1880s. The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) () is the body managing rugby union in the island of Ireland (both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). The IRFU has its head office at 10/12 Lansdowne Road and home ground at Aviva Stadium, where adult men's Ireland national rugby union team, Irish rugby union international matches are played. In addition, the Union also owns the Ravenhill Stadium in Belfast, Thomond Park in Limerick and a number of grounds in provincial areas that have been rented to clubs. Munster Junior Cup
The Munster Junior Cup is a rugby union competition played in the province of Munster, Ireland. The competition was established for the stronger junior clubs and the second teams of the Senior clubs in the province of Munster. The current champions are Cork Constitution in 2025. The competition has traditionally been dominated by senior clubs. Tony Ward (rugby Union)
Anthony Joseph Patrick Ward (born 8 October 1954) is an Irish former rugby union and football player during the 1970s and 1980s. He played rugby as a fly-half for Munster, Leinster, , the British and Irish Lions and the Barbarians. Ward was selected 1979 European rugby player of the year. He was born in Leeds before his Irish family moved back to Ireland. Playing career Ireland Ward won 19 caps for Ireland between 1978 and 1987. He made his international debut against Scotland at Lansdowne Road on 21 January 1978 at the age of 23, helping Ireland win 12–9. During the 1978 Five Nations Championship he scored 38 points, a record for a debutant. He made one major tour with Ireland, to Australia in 1979. During his career as an Ireland international he scored 113 points, including 29 penalties, 7 conversions and 4 drop goals. Willie Sexton
William J. Sexton (born 21 July 1959) is an Irish former rugby union international. Sexton, a native of Listowel, County Kerry, attended Castleknock College in Dublin. A flanker, Sexton played for Garryowen and Munster. He earned three Ireland caps, debuting against Australia at Lansdowne Road in 1984, with further appearances in 1988 against Scotland and England. Richard Wallace (rugby Union)
Richard Michael Wallace (born 16 January 1968) is a former Garryowen, Munster, Saracens, Ireland and Lions rugby union player. He was a winger and gained 29 caps with the Ireland national rugby union team. He was a member of the first Munster team to compete in the Heineken Cup. He made his full international debut in 1991 against Namibia. He is the all-time top try scorer for the Ireland national rugby sevens team in Rugby World Cup Sevens with 10 tries. Nicky Barry
Nicholas Michael Peter Barry (born 5 January 1969) is an Irish former rugby union international. Born in Limerick, Barry was a highly rated schoolboy player who won a Munster Schools Rugby Senior Cup with Crescent College in 1986. He started his senior career with Garryowen. Barry, usually a fly-half, toured France with Ireland as a 19 year old in 1988. He gained his only Irish cap in 1991, coming on as a substitute against Namibia in Windhoek. At provincial level, Barry started out with Munster, then played for Leinster after he joined St Mary's College, before declaring for Connacht in 1996, having linked up with Clontarf. Paul John Hogan (born 29 June 1968) is an Irish former rugby union international. Born in Limerick, Hogan was a back-rower who played for Garryowen and Munster. He gained one Ireland cap, as a flanker against France in Paris during the 1992 Five Nations Championship. Richard Costello (rugby Union)
Richard Anthony Costello (born 8 March 1964) is an Irish former rugby union international. Costello, born in Limerick, was a 6 ft 7 in lock who was capped once for Ireland, against Scotland at Murrayfield in the 1993 Five Nations Championship. He played his rugby for Garryowen and Munster. A publican by profession, Costello and his family have been running The Locke Bar in Limerick since 1989. Costello received a kidney from his wife Anna in 2013 following three years of declining health. Keith Wood
Keith Wood (born 27 January 1972) is an Irish former rugby union player who played as a hooker at international level for Ireland, and the British & Irish Lions. He also played at club level for Garryowen, Harlequins and Munster. He was nicknamed 'The Raging Potato' because of his bald head, and as ' Uncle Fester' due to his resemblance to the character in '' The Addams Family''. Wood is considered by many to have been the best hooker in rugby union during his era, winning the inaugural World Rugby Player of the Year award, and to be among the best hookers in the history of the game. David Wallace (rugby Union)
David Peter Wallace (born 8 July 1976) is an Irish retired rugby union player, who played for Munster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions. He normally played as an openside flanker, but could also play blindside flanker and number 8. Early life Wallace grew up in Limerick on Ennis Road, and later lived in Cork. He was educated at Crescent College Munster Wallace made his Munster debut against Connacht in August 1997. He made his European debut against Harlequins in September 1997 in the 1997–98 Heineken Cup. Wallace started for Munster in the 2000 Heineken Cup Final. Paul Burke (born 1 May 1973), educated at Epsom College in Surrey, is an Irish rugby union player who played at Fly Half. He has formerly played for Cork Constitution, London Irish, Munster, Bristol, Cardiff and Harlequins. Robert Alexander James Henderson (born 27 October 1972) is an Irish former rugby union player. He played mostly as a centre, for clubs including London Irish, Wasps, Leinster, Munster, Toulon and Esher.
