Garden City is a city in Ada County, Idaho. The population was 12,316 at the time of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Garden City is nearly surrounded by Boise, Idaho, Boise but retains a separate municipal government. Garden City was named for gardens raised by Chinese immigrants who lived in the area. The name of the city's only main street, Chinden Boulevard, is a portmanteau of the words "China" and "garden." In the second decade of the 21st century, it became a haven for artists' studios. Garden City is part of the Boise metropolitan area. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The ''Idaho Statesman'' is the daily newspaper of Boise, Idaho, in the western United States. It is owned by The McClatchy Company. History The paper was first published as the ''Idaho Tri-Weekly Statesman'' on July 26, 1864, by James S. Reynolds; it began publication from a log cabin on the current site of Boise City Hall. Reynolds owned and operated the paper for its first eight years, selling to Judge Milton Kelly in 1872. Kelly's 17-year run ended in 1888, with the expansion to daily publication, and a name change: The ''Idaho Daily Statesman''. That summer, Kelly sold the paper to the Cobb family, which went on to run the paper for 70 years. Surel's Place
Surel's Place is an artist in residency program located in Garden City, Idaho, in a home studio designed by local artist Surel Lee Mitchell, who died of lung cancer on October 10, 2011, twenty years after she quit smoking (only non-smokers are accepted). Established in 2011, it is Idaho's only live-in artist-in-residency program. The studio serves as the anchor of the eponymous neighborhood The Surel Mitchell Live/Work/Create District. Surel's Place is steps away from the Boise Greenbelt, blocks away from the Visual Arts Collective, and minutes via bicycle to downtown Boise itself. Capital High School is a three-year public secondary school in Boise, Idaho, United States. Opened in the fall of 1965, it was the third of four public high schools constructed in the Boise School District, and serves its northern portion. Boise High School is a public secondary school in Boise, Idaho, one of five traditional high schools within the city limits, four of which are in the Boise School District.
