Gabriel Marselis
Gabriel Marselis (1609 – buried 5 April 1673) was a wealthy Danish tradesman and land owner. Biography He was born in Hamburg, the son of the immigrated Dutch merchant Gabriel Marselis Sr. (c. 1575–1643), and was a brother of Selius Marselis. He settled in Amsterdam in 1634 and married the year after. The couple had three sons. In 1655 he remarried. His trading with King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway was partly paid with the Crown's properties and goods. Marselis thus became the owner of several iron works and copper works in Norway, and also became one of the largest landowners in Denmark and Norway. Gabriël Metsu (1629–1667) was a Dutch painter of history paintings, still lifes, portraits, and genre works. He was "a highly eclectic artist, who did not adhere to a consistent style, technique, or one type of subject for long periods". Only 14 of his 133 works are dated. Life Gabriel Metsu was the son of Jacques Metsu ( 1588 – March 1629), a tapestry worker and painter originally from Hainault, who lived most of his days at Leiden, and Jacquemijntje Garniers ( 1590 – 8 September 1651), the widow of a painter with three children of her own. It is not known when and where Gabriel was baptized; most likely in a Catholic hidden church but the baptismal records did not survive. Gabriel grew up on Lange Mare and his stepfather, a skipper, must have supported his education, because his mother was a poor midwife. Carel Van Nievelt
Carel van Nievelt (June 20, 1843 in Delfshaven – August 2, 1913 in Wiesbaden) was a Dutch novelist and journalist who also published using the pseudonyms Gabriël and J. van den Oude. He wrote travel stories and fantasies. Biography Van Nievelt had a short stint at being a civil servant in the Dutch East Indies before he returned to the Netherlands. There he became an editor for the daily Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (1869) and a contributor to ''Los en vast''. Later he wrote book reviews using the pseudonym ''J. van den Oude'' for the daily Nieuws van den Dag. In 1895 he moved to Wiesbaden, Germany, where he died in 1913 at the age of seventy.
