Gabas, Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Gabas is a hamlet (place), hamlet in the valley of the Gave d'Ossau in the France, French Pyrenees. It is located where that river is formed by the confluence of two mountain streams, the Gave de Bious and the Gave du Brousset, which flow respectively from the western and eastern sides of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau. The hamlet is on the D934 road that runs from Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Pau to Spain, via the Col du Pourtalet, at the point where it is crossed by the GR 10 (France), GR10 long distance footpath that runs the length of the Pyrenees. Because of this location, Gabas has become a tourist gateway with an importance beyond its size. It is the site of an information centre of the Pyrenees National Park, a mountain ecology centre, a mountain refuge and several hotels. Gave D'Ossau
The Gave d'Ossau () is the torrential river flowing through the Ossau Valley, one of the three main valleys of the High- Béarn ( Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Southwest of France. It is formed in Gabas from the confluence of two gaves coming from both sides of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau: * the Gave de Bious, from the Pic d'Astu (west) * the Gave du Brousset, from the Anéou Circus (east). After joining the Gave d'Aspe, in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, it forms the Gave d'Oloron. It is considered the upper course of the Gave d'Oloron by Sandre. Pyrenees
The Pyrenees are a mountain range straddling the border of France and Spain. They extend nearly from their union with the Cantabrian Mountains to Cap de Creus on the Mediterranean coast, reaching a maximum elevation of at the peak of Aneto. For the most part, the main crest forms a divide between Spain and France, with the microstate of Andorra sandwiched in between. Pic Du Midi D'Ossau
The Pic du Midi d'Ossau (; ; 2,884 m) is a mountain rising above the Ossau Valley in the French Pyrenees. Despite possessing neither a glacier nor, in the context of the range, a particularly high summit, its distinctive shape makes it a symbol of the French side of the Pyrenees. This familiar shape also makes it easily recognisable from afar, and it is particularly distinctive from the Boulevard des Pyrénées in Pau, some 55 km to the north. Appearance As normally seen from the north, the mountain presents itself as having two distinct peaks, although from the south two other summits are also visible. It stands separate from any surrounding peaks, being largely surrounded by the valleys of the Gave de Bious, to the west, and the Gave du Brousset, to the east. Pau (; ; ) is a Communes of France, commune overlooking the Pyrenees, the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Departments of France, department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regions of France, region of Southwestern France. The city is located in the heart of the former sovereign principality of Béarn, of which it was the capital from 1464. Col Du Pourtalet
The Col du Pourtalet, El Portalet or Portalet d'Aneu is a mountain pass and border crossing in the Pyrenees, between France and Spain. The pass reaches an elevation of , and links the Ossau and Tena valleys. The road across the pass is known as the A-136 on the Spanish side, and links to Biescas and Huesca. On the French side the D934 road connects the pass to the towns of Laruns, Oloron-Sainte-Marie and Pau. The pass is kept open in the winter, but in case of heavy snowfall may be closed for a couple of days. Due to the Schengen Agreement, the checkpoint is not currently functional. The French side of the pass falls within the ''commune'' of Laruns in the ''département'' of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, whilst the Spanish side is within the municipality of Sallent de Gállego within the province of Huesca. GR 10 (France)
GR 10 is a French GR footpath, or hiking trail, that runs the length of the Pyrenees, Pyrenees Mountains. It roughly parallels the French–Spanish border on the French side. Those attempting the entire trail often choose to walk it from west to east, from Hendaye on the Bay of Biscay to Banyuls-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean Sea, but it can also be traversed east to west. Description Hiking the entire route is estimated to take around 52 days for hikers who are physically fit and used to mountain hiking. Some stretches involve a lot of ascending and descending, including a few one-day sections that can climb and then descend , but the GR 10 is a hiking trail, and there is no actual Mountaineering, mountain climbing involved.
