GWR 6000 Class
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 6000 Class or King Class is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed for Inter-city rail, express passenger work and introduced in 1927. They were the largest locomotives built by the GWR, apart from the unique Pacific (GWR 111 The Great Bear, ''The Great Bear''). The class was named after kings of the United Kingdom and of England, beginning with the then reigning monarch, George V of the United Kingdom, King George V, and going back through history. They handled the principal GWR expresses on the Great Western Main Line, main line from London to the West of England and on the Chiltern Main Line, Chiltern line to Birmingham and Wolverhampton, until 1962 when the class was withdrawn. Charles Collett
Charles Benjamin Collett (10 September 1871 – 5 April 1952) was Chief mechanical engineer, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Western Railway from 1922 to 1941. He designed (amongst others) the GWR's GWR 4073 Class, Castle and GWR 6000 Class, King Class express passenger locomotives. Education and early career Collett was educated at the Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood, Merchant Taylors' School (then at Charterhouse Square, London) and the Imperial College Faculty of Engineering#City and Guilds College, City and Guilds College of London University. Felix Pole
Sir Felix John Clewett Pole (1 February 1877 – 15 January 1956) was a British railway manager and industrialist. He was general manager of the Great Western Railway from 1921 to 1929, before becoming executive chairman of Associated Electrical Industries, a post he held until 1945. Biography Early life Born in Little Bedwyn in Wiltshire, Pole joined the Great Western Railway as a telegraph lad at Swindon, aged 14, in 1891. Career He was rapidly promoted and in 1904 was working in General Manager James Charles Inglis's department in the headquarters at Paddington station, working on the railway's marketing campaigns. SR Lord Nelson Class
The SR class LN or ''Lord Nelson'' class is a type of 4-cylinder 4-6-0 steam locomotive designed for the Southern Railway by Richard Maunsell in 1926. They were intended for Continental boat trains between London (Victoria) and Dover harbour, but were also later used for express passenger work to the South-West of England. Sixteen of them were constructed, representing the most powerful (although not the most successful) Southern 4-6-0 design. They were all named after famous admirals. GWR 4700 Class
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 4700 Class was a class of nine 2-8-0 steam locomotives, designed by George Jackson Churchward. They were introduced in 1919 for heavy mixed-traffic work. Although primarily designed for fast freight, the class also sometimes hauled passenger trains, notably heavy holiday expresses in the summer months. They were unofficially nicknamed "Night Owls" because they were primarily designed to haul goods during the night and they could be seen simmering in the daylight, awaiting their nocturnal duties. The Great Western Railway 4000 or Star were a class of 4-cylinder 4-6-0 passenger steam locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward for the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1906 and introduced from early 1907. The prototype was built as a 4-4-2 Atlantic (but converted to 4-6-0 during 1909). They proved to be a successful design which handled the heaviest long-distance express trains, reaching top speeds of 90 mph (145 km/h), and established the design principles for GWR 4-cylinder classes over the next twenty-five years. George Jackson Churchward (31 January 1857 – 19 December 1933) was an English railway engineer, and was chief mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR) in the United Kingdom from 1902 to 1922. Early life Churchward was born at Rowes Farm, Stoke Gabriel, Devon, where his ancestors (the senior line residing at Hill House; his paternal grandfather, Matthew, was the younger son of the head of the family) had been squires since 1457.
