GCS 2000
''GCS 2000'' is a studio album by funk group Graham Central Station released on July 21, 1998, on NPG Records. It was their first new album in America since 1979's '' Star Walk''. Background Prince had greatly boosted the career of another funk artist, Chaka Khan, in 1984 with her platinum-selling album, '' I Feel for You''. In 1998, he tried to revitalize her career with the album '' Come 2 My House''. It was released the same day as ''GCS 2000'' and peaked at #49 R&B. Graham Central Station was an American funk music, funk band named after founder Larry Graham (formerly of Sly and the Family Stone). The name is a pun on New York City's Grand Central Terminal, often colloquially called Grand Central Station. History Origins The band's origins date from when Santana (band), Santana guitarist Neal Schon formed the band Azteca (band), Azteca in 1972 along with Larry Graham (bass guitar) and Gregg Errico (Drum kit, drums), both from Sly and the Family Stone, and Pete Sears (Keyboard instrument, keyboards), from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Santana bass guitar player Tom Rutley moved into the bass spot with Azteca. That band, like Santana with heavy Latin influences, eventually morphed into Graham Central Station, while Schon formed Journey (band), Journey. ''Come 2 My House'' is the ninth studio album by American R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan released on the NPG Records label in 1998. ''Come 2 My House'' was Khan's first full-length album since 1992's '' The Woman I Am'', due to the Warner Bros. Records label postponing and eventually cancelling the release of her tenth album ''Dare You to Love Me'' (1995). The New Power Generation
The New Power Generation, also known as the NPG, was the backing band of musician Prince from 1990 to 2013. They were replaced by 3rdeyegirl as his backing band in 2013. In 2015, the New Power Generation reunited as Prince's backing band for his final studio album before his death, '' Hit n Run Phase Two''. They reunited once again in 2017 for a US and European tour. Gerald L. Martini (born October 1, 1942) is an American musician, best known for being the saxophonist for Sly and the Family Stone. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as a member of Sly and the Family Stone. Early life Martini was born in Denver, Colorado. He was introduced to music at an early age. By 12 years old, he had learned to play the ukulele, accordion, and clarinet. It was at 13 he learned the saxophone, his instrument of choice. Only two years later, he began gigging at local bars. Cynthia Robinson (January 12, 1944 – November 23, 2015) was an American musician, best known for being a founding member of Sly and the Family Stone, for which she was the trumpeter and a vocalist. Slapping and popping are ways to produce percussive sounds on a stringed instrument. They are primarily used on the double bass or bass guitar. Slapping on bass guitar involves using the edge of one's knuckle, where it is particularly bony, to quickly strike the string against the fretboard.
