Franklins was an Australian discount supermarket chain selling packaged groceries and perishables throughout New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. It sold the "No Frills" home brand generic products. In 2011 the chain was bought by Metcash and the stores were sold off, shut down or converted into new supermarket banners or other brands. The final store closed in April 2015. History Beginnings (1941–1978) In 1941, Franklins was established in Sydney by Frank Lindstrom. It was his second supermarket chain, having sold his first one to Woolworths. In 1954, Franklins was acquired by Harold Cornock and Norman Tieck. BI-LO (Australia)
Bi-Lo was an Australian supermarket chain owned by Wesfarmers. Once a chain of 180 outlets, Bi-Lo stores were progressively re-branded as Coles Supermarkets from 2006, or closed. On 30 June 2017, the final store in Shailer Park, Queensland closed. History Bi-Lo was established by John, Peter and David Weeks in South Australia in 1979. The first stores opened at Stirling and Aldgate in South Australia's Adelaide Hills region after being converted from hardware outlets, followed by the acquisition of a third store at Murray Bridge. Coles Myer cited that by 1979, Bi-Lo was South Australia's cheapest grocer. Food For Less
Food For Less was an Australian discount supermarket chain owned by Woolworths Limited. It was originally established in Queensland, where a discount 'food barn' chain operating as "Jack the Slasher" was acquired by Safeway USA and when Woolworths took over Safeway in 1990. The stores were positioned as low-cost locations that sold dry groceries and frozen perishables. It later expanded into New South Wales and became the low-cost supermarket chain for Woolworths, competing with Franklins No Frills, Coles Myer's Bi-Lo and Aldi. The chain expanded when Woolworths purchased the Franklins stores in New South Wales and Queensland, and converted them to the Food For Less brand. In 2010 Woolworths began to shut down the brand. Stockland Glendale (previously known as Stockland Super Centre Glendale) is a large shopping centre located in the suburb of Glendale in the City of Lake Macquarie. It is located on Lake Road on a parcel of land, and primarily serves the Lake Macquarie region to the southwest of Newcastle. Transport Stockland Glendale has bus connections to Belmont, Cardiff, Charlestown, Kotara, Newcastle, Seahampton, Swansea, Toronto, Warners Bay, Wallsend and West Wallsend, as well as local surrounding suburbs. Big Fresh
Big Fresh was a New Zealand supermarket chain. The first Big Fresh store opened in 1988 in Mount Wellington, Auckland. In 2003, the Big Fresh brand was shut-down by its owner Progressive Enterprises, with branches converted to Countdown or Woolworths, or shut down altogether. The distinguishing feature of the Big Fresh was its emulation of a farmers market in a supermarket environment, with a focus on an extensive range of fresh foods; this was unique in New Zealand at the time of its opening. Macquarie Centre is a shopping centre in the suburb of Macquarie Park on the North Shore of Sydney and is located opposite the main campus of Macquarie University. IGA (Australian Supermarket Group)
Independent Grocers of Australia (IGA) is an Australian chain of supermarkets. IGA is owned by Metcash, but individual IGA stores are owned independently. Its main competitors are Woolworths, Coles, Spar and Aldi. It is the fourth largest chain, since Aldi overtook Metcash in supermarket revenues. Markets The American-owned Independent Grocers Alliance has over 5,000 stores in over 30 countries. The IGA brand was introduced to Australia by Davids Holdings in 1988 when 10 stores became members of IGA. A private label, also called a private brand or private-label brand, is a brand owned by a company, offered by that company alongside and competing with brands from other businesses. A private-label brand is almost always offered exclusively by the firm that owns it, although in rare instances the brand is licensed to another company. The brand usually consists of products, but can also encompass services. Private labels typically involve outsourcing, in which company A hires company B to provide them with a product or service, which is then offered under a brand name of company A. The Australian Capital Territory (commonly abbreviated as ACT), known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) until 1938, is a landlocked federal territory of Australia containing the national capital Canberra and some surrounding townships.
