Flinders Ranges Council
Flinders Ranges Council is a local government area (LGA) located in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. The LGA is approximately 100 km from north to south, and 45 km from east to west, with a total area of 4,198 square kilometres. The main towns within the council are Hawker and Quorn; it also includes the localities of Barndioota, Kanyaka and Stephenston, and part of Bruce, Cradock, Flinders Ranges, Moockra, Saltia, Shaggy Ridge, Wilmington and Yarrah. It was created on 1 January 1997 following the merger of the District Council of Kanyaka-Quorn and the District Council of Hawker. The LGA adjoins the following to the south - City of Port Augusta, District Council of Mount Remarkable and District Council of Orroroo Carrieton, while the remainder of the adjoining land is within the unincorporated area of South Australia where municipal services are provided by the Outback Communities Authority. Stephenston, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Stephenston is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about east of the municipal seat of Quorn. Boundaries for the locality were created in March 1997 for the “long established name“ which was “incorrectly spelt as Stephenson” in the South Australian Government Gazette of 13 March 1997 and is derived from the ceased Government Town of Stephenston whose site is located within the boundaries of the locality. The Government Town of Stephenston which was located in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Palmer was surveyed in February 1879, proclaimed on 17 July 1879 and was finally declared as ‘ceasing to exist’ on 11 May 1961. A school operated from 1881 to 1915 and a post office operated from November 1879 to 1904. Bruce, South Australia
Bruce is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about north of the state capital of Adelaide. The Town of Bruce was surveyed in February 1881 on land in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Willochra. It was proclaimed on 19 May 1881. Its name is reported in one source as being named after a "well known landowner in the district" while another source suggests that it was named by the Governor of South Australia after one of his family or friends. It was the site of a railway station on the Peterborough–Quorn railway line which operated from 1882 to 1987. A post office operated from 1882 to 1976 and a school operated from 1882 to 1962. Boundaries for the locality were proclaimed on 13 March 1997 and was named after the town whose site is located within its boundaries. District Council Of Hawker
The District Council of Hawker was a local government area in South Australia from 1888 to 1997, centred on the town of Hawker. At its creation it was the northernmost local government area in the state. History It was established on 5 January 1888 under the provisions of the ''District Councils Act 1887''. It comprised the hundreds of Arkaba in the County of Hanson, Barndioota and Wonoka in the County of Blachford, and Wirreanda and Yednalue in the County of Granville. Land from each of the hundreds of Adams and Warcowie was added to the District Council on 12 May 1932. In 1936, it was reported to have an estimated population of 975 across an area of 300 square miles. In that year, the council elected a member from five wards, one for each of the initial hundreds. The District Council of Kanyaka-Quorn was a local government area in South Australia that existed from 1969 to 1997. The Council came into existence on 1 April 1969 following the merger of the Corporate Town of Quorn with the surrounding District Council of Kanyaka. It operated out of the former Quorn council's offices. In 1983, the council published a book commemorating 100 years of local government in the district. Yarrah is a rural locality in the Far North region of South Australia. The eastern section of Yarrah lies within the Flinders Ranges Council, while the western section lies in the Pastoral Unincorporated Area. History The traditional owners of the area are the Barngarla people. The name 'Yarrah' is said to come from an Aboriginal word meaning "river red gum". Wilmington is a town and locality in the Yorke and Mid North region of South Australia.The town is located in the District Council of Mount Remarkable local government area, north of the state capital, Adelaide. Saltia, South Australia
Saltia is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the western side of the Flinders Ranges about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about east of the city of Port Augusta. Saltia began as a private sub-division associated with Sections 901 and 902 of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Woolundunga in 1862. The developer was Charles Simmons who purchased the land prior to 1859 followed by the erection of a hotel in the same year and the layout of the "town" in 1862. The name is derived from an Aboriginal word ''thaltja'' meaning "the gums" and spelt as ''thaltia'' in 1855. A post office was opened around 1869. It was declared as a place name on 13 December 1984. __NOTOC__ Flinders Ranges is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the mountain range of the same name, about north of the state capital of Adelaide, about north-east of the municipal seat in Quorn and about north-east of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Its boundaries were created in April 2013, with the name selected in respect to the ‘long established local name’. Its southern boundary was altered in November 2013 with the addition of land from Hawker and the transfer of land to Shaggy Ridge.
