Figure skating at the 1968 Winter Olympics was held at Le Stade Olympique de Glace in Grenoble, France. Ice dance, then known as "rhythmic skating," was a demonstration event and was won by the team of Diane Towler and Bernard Ford of Great Britain. Palais Des Sports (Grenoble)
Palais des Sports, known also as the Palais des sports Pierre Mendes or "Le Stade Olympique de Glace" is an indoor ice hockey arena, located in Paul Mistral Park in Grenoble, France. The vaulted roof structure was built from November 1966 to April 1967, therefore having tough weather problems to add to construction difficulties. The stadium was conceived for the Olympiques Winter Games held in Grenoble in 1968 and has a capacity of up to 12,000 spectators. Events The figure skating events and some ice hockey games at the 1968 Winter Olympics were held at this arena called for the event ''Stade de glace''. The arena hosted the 1972 (3rd) European Athletics Indoor Championships over 11 and 12 March, the arena was featured on the medals awarded (pictured). Giordano Abbondati
Giordano Giulio Abbondati (29 May 1948 – 21 April 2005) was an Italian figure skater and seven-time national champion in 1961–66 and 1968. He competed in several European and World Championships in the 1960s, in addition to the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympic Games, in both of which he placed 14th. Giordano retired from figure skating in 1968 to pursue a career in medicine but continued to be involved in figure skating as an international competition judge for many years. Peter Krick (born 31 January 1944) is a German former competitive figure skater who represented West Germany. He is a three-time (1966–68) national champion and finished in the top ten at seven ISU Championships – four Europeans and three Worlds. Günter Zöller (born 21 May 1948) is a German figure skating coach and former competitor for East Germany. He is the 1970 World bronze medalist, the 1970 European bronze medalist, a five-time Blue Swords champion, and a five-time East German national champion. Personal life Günter Zöller was born 21 May 1948 in Chemnitz. Career Zöller began figure skating as a child. Coached by Jutta Müller, he represented the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and East Germany. Zöller debuted at the European Championships in 1963 and finished 19th. In 1965, he won his first East German national title and was sent to the 1965 European Championships, where he placed 12th. Sergei Alexandrovich Chetverukhin (russian: Серге́й Александрович Четверухин; born 12 January 1946) is a former Soviet figure skater. He is the 1972 Olympic silver medalist, a three-time World medalist, and a four-time European medalist. Personal life Chetverukhin was born on 12 January 1946 in Moscow, Soviet Union. He moved to Canada in 1990 at the invitation of Canadian figure skater Donald Jackson. He holds Russian and Canadian citizenship. He is married and has a daughter. Career Chetverukhin trained at VSS Trud in Moscow. He was coached by Tatyana Tolmacheva and later by Stanislav Zhuk. Ondrej Nepela (22 January 1951 – 2 February 1989) was a Slovak figure skater who represented Czechoslovakia. He was the 1972 Olympic champion, a three-time World champion (1971–73), and a five-time European champion (1969–73). Later in his career, he performed professionally and became a coach. Early life Nepela was born on 22 January 1951 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. His mother, a housewife and seamstress, and father, a chauffeur, were from central Slovakia. Career Nepela became interested in skating after watching the 1958 European Championships on television — Karol Divín won the men's title for Czechoslovakia. In February 1958, his mother brought the seven-year-old to a Bratislava ice rink.
