Felix Nussbaum
Felix Nussbaum (December 11, 1904 – August 9, 1944) was a German Jews, German-Jewish surrealist Painting, painter. Nussbaum’s work gives insights into the essence of one person among the victims of the Holocaust. Early life and education Nussbaum was born in Osnabrück, Germany, to parents Rahel and Philipp Nussbaum. His father was a World War I veteran and Germany, German patriot before the rise of the Nazis. He was an amateur painter when he was younger, but was forced to pursue other means of work for financial reasons. Because of this, he is said to have encouraged his son to pursue art as a profession. Nussbaum was a lifelong student, beginning his formal studies in 1920 in Hamburg and Berlin, and continuing as long as the contemporary political situation allowed him. In his earlier works, Nussbaum was heavily influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Rousseau, and he eventually paid homage to Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà as well. Carlo Carrà
Carlo Carrà (; February 11, 1881 – April 13, 1966) was an Italian painter and a leading figure of the Futurist movement that flourished in Italy during the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to his many paintings, he wrote a number of books concerning art. He taught for many years in the city of Milan. Biography Carrà was born in Quargnento, near Alessandria (Piedmont). At the age of 12 he left home in order to work as a mural decorator. In 1899–1900, Carrà was in Paris decorating pavilions at the Exposition Universelle, where he became acquainted with contemporary French art. He then spent a few months in London in contact with exiled Italian anarchists, and returned to Milan in 1901. In 1906, he enrolled at Brera Academy (''Accademia di Brera'') in the city, and studied under Cesare Tallone. Vichy France (french: Régime de Vichy; 10 July 1940 – 9 August 1944), officially the French State ('), was the fascist French state headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain during World War II. Officially independent, but with half of its territory occupied under harsh terms of the armistice, it adopted a policy of collaboration with Nazi Germany, which occupied the northern and western portions before occupying the remainder of Metropolitan France in November 1942. Saint-Cyprien (; ca, Sant Cebrià de Rosselló) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France. Geography History In the 20th century Saint-Cyprien was the site of a camp housing some 70,000 Republican escapees from Spain at the end of the Spanish Civil War. They were held in very poor conditions, in open spaces enclosed by barbed wire, from which they were not allowed to leave. During the Second World War it was used to intern people before they were sent to extermination camps. Felka Platek
Felka Platek (Felka Płatek; 3 November 1899 – 2 August 1944) was a Polish artist. Biography Platek was born on 3 November 1899 in Warsaw, Poland. She was the companion and later the wife of the German painter Felix Nussbaum. The couple fled Germany around 1935. They lived in Paris, then Ostend, settling in Brussels where they married in 1937. Nussbaum and Platek were arrested by the Germans in 1944. They were sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp Platek was murdered, probably on or about 2 August 1944 at Auschwitz. Legacy In 2014 the International Auschwitz Committee sponsored a program entitled "Find Felka! Find Felix!". The Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück includes a permanent display of Platek's work.
