Funeral Doom
Funeral doom is a subgenre of death-doom with heavy influence from Dirge, funeral dirge music. Low-Guitar tunings, tuned Electric guitar, guitars, death growls, instruments that emulate pipe organ sounds and ponderous pace are typical traits of this style. History An offshoot of death-doom, the genre was mostly inspired by the work of Autopsy (band), Autopsy, Winter (metal band), Winter, Cathedral (band), Cathedral and early Paradise Lost (band), Paradise Lost. Death-doom
Death-doom (also known as death-doom metal or doom-death) is a fusion genre of death metal and doom metal. It combines the slow tempos and pessimistic or depressive mood of doom metal with the deep death growl, growling vocals and double bass drum, double-kick drumming of death metal. The genre emerged in the late 1980s and gained a certain amount of popularity during the 1990s, but had become less common by the turn of the 21st century. In turn, death-doom gave rise to the closely related genre of funeral doom as well as to the more melodic, gloomy and romantic gothic metal. Cathedral (band)
Cathedral were a British doom metal band from Coventry, England. The group gained attention upon release of its debut album, '' Forest of Equilibrium'' (1991), which is considered a classic of the genre. However, the band's sound evolved quickly and began to adopt characteristics of 1970s metal, hard rock and progressive rock. After releasing ten full-length albums and touring extensively for over two decades, Cathedral broke up after the release of '' The Last Spire'' in 2013. Mournful Congregation
Mournful Congregation is a funeral doom metal band from Adelaide, South Australia, which was founded in 1993, and has included members of Chalice (band), Chalice, Cauldron Black Ram and Esoteric (band), Esoteric. History Beginnings (1993–2009) During the 1990s the band released three demos; the last of these ''Tears From A Grieving Heart'' was re-released on vinyl in 2001. All of the band's demo releases were included, alongside their side of the split single with Worship, ''The Epitome of Gods and Men Alike'', on the double CD ''The Dawning of Mournful Hymns'' released in 2002. Shape Of Despair
Shape of Despair is a funeral doom band from Finland. History The band was founded in 1995 as Raven by Jarno Salomaa (guitars, later also keyboards), Tomi Ullgrén (bass, later guitars) and Toni "Otso" Mäensivu (drums, later vocals). They aspired to play faster, instrumental black metal influenced music following the footsteps of their contemporaries like Strid, Burzum, Darkthrone and Unholy. However, the trio soon decided that the music they played was not as good as they wanted it to be, feeling that it lacked the atmosphere and emotion of the bands that influenced them. During the summer of 1995, Raven recorded their rehearsals on cassette tapes, capturing all the songs that later became the ''Alone In The Mist'' demo. Evoken
Evoken is an American funeral doom band from Lyndhurst, New Jersey, United States. Evoken is one of the earliest U.S. death-doom bands that are still active today, along with Novembers Doom and Rigor Sardonicous. History Founding years The band was founded by guitarist Nick Orlando under the name Funereus in April 1992. The original line-up consisted of Rob (bass/vocals), Nick (guitar), Phil (guitar) and Vince (drums). They recorded a rehearsal demo in 1992, which would be the only release under the Funereus name. After briefly changing their name to Asmodeus the following year, the band eventually decided upon the name Evoken in 1994 after several line-up changes. Esoteric is an English funeral doom metal band from Birmingham, founded in 1992. Releasing seven studio albums, and a demo, the band is widely regarded as among the first groups to develop the funeral doom style. The band has named a variety of groups as influences, such as metal bands Morbid Angel and My Dying Bride, more "trippy" artists such as Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3, and King Crimson, and the industrial and dark ambient genres. History Esoteric was formed in 1992, and in 1993, released '' Esoteric Emotions – The Death of Ignorance'' – a demo tape containing 82 minutes of material with a total of eight tracks. Disembowelment, often styled as diSEMBOWELMENT, were an Australian death-doom band that formed in November 1989 featuring Renato Gallina on guitar and vocals, and Paul Mazziotta on drums. In early 1991 Jason Kells joined on lead guitar and at the end of that year the group's line-up was completed by Matthew Skarajew on bass guitar. Unholy (band)
Unholy was a Finnish avant-garde doom metal band. Formed in 1988, they were one of the first doom metal groups in their home country. History Unholy originally started as a black-doom hybrid in 1988 under the name Holy Hell. After recording their first two demos in 1989, "Unhallowed Passion" and "Kill Jesus", they ultimately changed their name to Unholy in 1990. The band achieved underground popularity with its next demo and the 1991 EP ''Trip to Depressive Autumn'', and signed with Lethal Records, an Austrian record label that released the band's first album, ''From the Shadows'', in 1993. Unholy then signed with Avantgarde Music for the next album, ''The Second Ring of Power'', but disbanded soon after its release in 1994. However, they re-formed only two years later. Skepticism (band)
Skepticism is a Finnish Funeral doom, funeral doom metal band. Formed in 1991, they are regarded as one of the pioneers of the genre. History Starting out with a death metal sound on their first 7", Skepticism soon began to evolve into a more distinctive style, a combination of slow doom metal and death metal with prolific use of electronic keyboard, keyboards, especially using an organ (music), organ sound. The keyboards intend to create a depressive sound, rather than the gothic metal, gothic sound that many heavy metal music, metal bands using keyboards tend to focus on. This style was first heard on the ''Aeothe Kaear'' demo (1994), which was still up-tempo compared to the material that was to follow.
