The Funariidae are a widespread group of mosses in class Bryopsida.Buck, William R. & Bernard Goffinet. 2000. "Morphology and classification of mosses", pages 71-123 ''in'' A. Jonathan Shaw & Bernard Goffinet (Eds.), ''Bryophyte Biology''. (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press). . The majority of species belong to the genera '' Funaria'' (c. 200 species) and '' Physcomitrium'' (c. 80 species). Classification The Funariidae include three monotypic orders, with around 350 species, most of which belong either to the genus ''Funaria'' or ''Physcomitrium''. : Order Encalyptales :: Family Encalyptaceae (2 genera, 35 species) : : Order Funariales :: Family Funariaceae (14 genera, ca. 300 species) : : Order Disceliales :: Family Disceliaceae (1 species '' Discelium nudum'') Description Species in the subclass Funariidae typically live on or near the ground. Their stems typically have a central strand differentiated from the surrounding cells. The peristome teeth of their sporang ... Funaria Hygrometrica
''Funaria hygrometrica'', the bonfire moss or common cord-moss, is a type of water moss which grows on shady, moist soil. It can also be found on moist walls and the crevices of rocks and places where recent fires have taken place. It has been reported to grow in Niagara Cave, an artificially illuminated cave devoid of natural light. Under such conditions, its growth form changes so that the internodes lengthen and the leaves become longer and narrower. The plant body is green, soft and upright, about half an inch tall. The rhizoids present in this species are multi-cellular and branched. They have oblique septa. The main axis of the plant, which is upright, bears a set of spirally arranged, sessile leaves having a clearly distinguishable midrib. At the apex of the main plant axis, the antheridium is borne. This is the male part of the shoot. A lateral branch from the main plant axis bears the female shoot archegonium at its meristem. Experiments have shown that F. hygromet ... Oedipodium
''Oedipodium'' is the only genus of moss in the family Oedipodiaceae. It contains the single species ''Oedipodium griffithianum'', the gouty-moss or Griffith's oedipodium moss. This species is distributed in cooler climates of Eurasia, as well as from Alaska, Washington state, British Columbia, Yukon, Greenland, Newfoundland, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. The relationship of ''Oedipodium'' to other mosses has been much debated. Previously, the taxon has been included with the Funariales or the Splachnales. However, characteristics of the protonemata and asexual propagation, along with molecular evidence, point to a closer relationship with the Tetraphidaceae Tetraphidaceae is a family of mosses. It includes only the two genus, genera ''Tetraphis'' and ''Tetrodontium'', each with two species. The defining feature of the family is the 4-toothed peristome. Max Fleischer (painter)
Richard Paul Max Fleischer (4 July 1861, Lipine in Oberschlesien, Kingdom of Prussia – 3 April 1930, Menton, France) was a German painter and bryologist. As a botanist, he is remembered for his work with Javan mosses. Biography He took art classes in Breslau, qualifying as an art teacher in 1881. He furthered his studies in Munich and Paris, where his interest in natural sciences grew. He subsequently moved to Zurich in 1892 in order to study geology. In the latter part of the 1890s, he was invited by botanist Melchior Treub to Java as an illustrator. On Java, along with his artistic duties, he collected regional botanical specimens and conducted investigations of the island's mosses. Fleischer distributed several exsiccatae, among them ''Musci frondosi Archipelagi Indici exsiccati'' and – together with Carl Friedrich Warnstorf – ''Bryotheca Europaea Meridionalis''.Triebel, D. & Scholz, P. 2001–2024 ''IndExs – Index of Exsiccatae''. Order (biology)
Order () is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between family and class. In biological classification, the order is a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. An immediately higher rank, superorder, is sometimes added directly above order, with suborder directly beneath order. An order can also be defined as a group of related families. What does and does not belong to each order is determined by a taxonomist, as is whether a particular order should be recognized at all. Often there is no exact agreement, with different taxonomists each taking a different position. There are no hard rules that a taxonomist needs to follow in describing or recognizing an order. Some taxa are accepted almost universally, while others are recognized only rarely. The name of an order is usually written with a capital letter. For some groups of organisms, their orders may follow consist ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

''Discelium'' is the only genus of moss in the family Disceliaceae, containing a single species, ''Discelium nudum'', known as flag-moss. This species is rare but is widely distributed across cool and temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere The Northern Hemisphere is the half of Earth that is north of the equator. Splachnaceae
Splachnaceae is a family (biology), family of mosses, containing around 70 species in 6 genera. Around half of those species are entomophily, entomophilous, using insects to disperse their spores, a characteristic found in no other seedless land plants. Many species in this family are coprophilous, growing exclusively on animal faeces or carrion. For this reason, certain genera such as ''Splachnum'' Hedw. are often referred to as dung mosses. Description Gametophyte Mosses in this family are predominantly dioicous (archegonia and antheridia on separate individuals); although exceptions are known such as ''S.'' ''pensylvanicum'' which is monoicous. The gametophyte is always acrocarpous (standing up), with green-yellow to reddish leaves/stems, and most often under 5 cm in height. Stems stand vertically and when cross-sectioned, can be seen to have a well-defined central strand. Large parenchymatous cells surround the central strand with thin, red to orange cell walls. Cor ...
