The Japan Racing Association Derby-Trial is a Conditions races, Group 3 Flat racing, flat Horse racing, horse race in Germany open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles) at Baden-Baden in late May or early June. History The event was established in 1965, and it was originally called the Adolf Schindling-Rennen. It was named in memory of Adolf Schindling (1887–1963), a Frankfurt-born businessman who owned the successful stud farm Gestüt Asta. The race was given Group 3 status in 1982. For a period it was sponsored by Steigenberger Hotels and run as the Preis der Steigenberger Hotels. It was later backed by BMW and titled the BMW Händler-Trophy. The banking company Metzler Bank, Bankhaus Metzler took over the sponsorship in 2000. Baden-Baden () is a spa town in the states of Germany, state of Baden-Württemberg, south-western Germany, at the north-western border of the Black Forest mountain range on the small river Oos (river), Oos, ten kilometres (six miles) east of the Rhine, the border with France, and forty kilometres (twenty-five miles) north-east of Strasbourg, France. Alain Lequeux
Alain Lequeux (1947 – 26 April 2006) was one of France's leading jockeys in the 1970s and 1980s. He won 33 Group or Grade 1 races, including the 1981 Washington, D.C. International Stakes aboard Providential for trainer Charlie Whittingham. Son of leading French rider Guy Lequeux, he won more than 2,000 races while riding in France from 1963 to 1992. He won the 1974 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-G1) (French One Thousand Guineas) with Dumka, and the 1979 St. Leger Stakes (Eng-G1) with Son of Love (Fr). A noted gourmet, following his retirement from racing the popular and personable Lequeux owned and operated the Cafe Lequeux in Chantilly not far from the Chantilly Racecourse. Bauyrzhan Murzabayev
Bauyrzhan Murzabayev (, ''Bauyrjan Mūrzabaev''; born September 17, 1992) is a Kazakhstani jockey currently active in France. He is the 4-time German flat racing Champion Jockey from 2019 to 2022. Overview Murzabayev was born on September 17, 1992, in Almaty to a family that owned racehorses, which led him to grow an interest in horse racing. He first earned his jockey license in his native country in 2007 before moving to the Czech Republic, where he won the European Jockeys Cup in 2016 and 2018. He started racing in Germany also, formerly employed by trainers Peter Schiergen and Andreas Wöhler. Under Schiergen, Murzabayev won the Deutsches Derby in 2022 as Sammarco's jockey. Rene Piechulek
Rene Piechulek (born April 24, 1987) is a German flat racing jockey. Career Piechulek earned his first jockey license in Germany in 2004. In 2021, Piechulek won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Torquator Tasso. The riding crop he used in that race was a gift that Filip Minařík, who had recently retired at the time, gave to him from Japan. In 2024, Piechulek came to Japan as a jockey for the first time, using the short-term license policy. He secured his first victory in Japan after 32 starts, on January 14, when Roselle won R12 of the Nakayama Racecourse that day. He later won his first JRA graded race on February 4 when he won the Kisaragi Sho with . On February 16, the JRA announced that as of February 18 he would be cancelling his short-term license with the JRA due to personal reasons. Sea The Moon (foaled 27 January 2011) is a retired German Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2014 Deutsches Derby. He was trained by Markus Klug, and bred and owned by Gestut Görlsdorf. Novellist is an Irish-bred, German-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won major races in four countries including the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in Italy, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the United Kingdom and the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany. Andrasch Starke (born 4 January 1974, in Germany) is a jockey in international Thoroughbred horse racing. Starke began racing at age fifteen as an amateur and since turning professional has won the German riding championship six times. He has competed in Canada and the United States and has won races in Dubai, France, Italy, Japan, and Singapore. In recent years Starke has also raced seasonally in Hong Kong where on two occasions he won the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley Racecourse. Andreas Schütz (born 19 February 1968) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. From a prominent racing family, he is the fourth generation to train professionally. Andreas Schütz started out as an amateur jockey, winning four German championships from 1984–1987 and the European championship in 1987. In 1992 he began working as an assistant trainer for his father Bruno Schütz who had built one of the Germany's most successful public training stables. Due to health problems, his father retired and in 1998 Andreas took over the running of the stable.
